Who would have come out on top, had they just went for it. My money is
on windu, but only because he did take out the emperor (those of you
believing that the emperor faked it, are those that also believe the
emperor could have sustained padme's life - idiots) and therefore could
have seen off dooku, eclipsing anakin's biggest scalp to date.

In regards to the Emperor faking it i honestly think that he was in Danger
from Windu and actually was willing to "sacrifice" himself to get Anakin to
turn to the Dark side. He pretty much bet the whole kitchen sink that Anakin
would do what he did.....Clairvoyance maybe? Which brings me to the question
how Palpatine knew Anakin(Vader) was in Danger when he seemed to be having
the upper hand against Obi Wan. Windu would have definitely kicked Anakins
Butt though.

I agree, Windu would've won without a doubt.
Since that Palpatine is already better at this then Anakin, if Windu can
beat Palpatine
then Anakin would be a piece of cake.
If you've ever seen Clone Wars, you would see how this question is not very
conclusive.
The Skills of Windu VS Anakin are just no match.

But in saying this, (I haven't read labyrinth of evil) my guess is that
palpatine had to coax dooku to do his bidding and teach him various
aspects of the force - lightning and the force grip (called dark rage
in a SW game). If the emperor had to manipulate older and far more
experience personnel, why would he have to go through the process of
allowing windu to maim him and almost kill him in order to get anakin
to turn. In the original SW the emperor was the only person we saw who
could cast lightning and because he was someone vader deferred to, we
had a notion that he was far more powerful than he actually was.
Anakin was already on the precipice, a meer touch would have surficed,
not the shove that eventually secured his fate.
I don't give obi wan credit for seeing off anakin, as obi wan was in
full flight by the end of their encounter, and it was anakin's
inability to temper his feeling that lead to his downfall.
Yoda had sensed when anakin was in pain after killing the sand people,
just as palpatine could have sensed that anakin was having difficulty
finishing off obi wan.

I watched this movie many times and every time I see it, Palpatine
conveniently tossed out his own light saber as Anakin arrives on the scene.
Palpatine sensed Anakin's arrival, thus he was able to take out the other
Jedi "Masters" in a blink of an eye, but held onto Mace for the sake of
turning Anakin to the dark side of the force!
I loved it!! Palpatine did not uses his force lightning before Anakin
arrived.
Palpatine was showing Anakin the POWERRRRR of the dark side of the force!!
"Anakin, I was RIGHT!!" -Palpatine (master of manipulation)

Please read my post again, the emperor was defeated by mace windu. You
could use this arguement to say that dooku allowed anakin to beat him
in the hopes that he could get him to turn to the dark side of the
force - bullshit.
GL only had time for a mace windu and emperor fight scene, and that is
why he let the other jedi get killed so quickly.
The emperor doesn't toss aside his lightsaber, it is removed from his
hand when he gets kicked backwards.
Anakin was turning to the dark side of the force in the first episode,
by ROTS he was virtually there. Don't you think that it is a bit too
elaborate a ploy to go through the whole fight scene, the emperor
didn't know that mace windu wanted to kill him, he had come there to
arrest him. And if that had happen then the emperor would be behind
bars with anakin's help.

I say Anakin. Windu was the "second best" of the jedi. When Anakin
became Vader, his skill jumped. Windu couldn't even see the evil inside
of Anakin at the moment he cut his hand off, thus not seeing the plot
Palp was doing, right infront of him.
"I sense a plot to destroy the jedi". Yeah, too bad he couldn't see he
was being played by Palp the moment he walked into the room, thinking he
was high and mighty and was actually gonna arrest a sith lord!
What the hell did he think he was gonna do, actually outsmart A SITH
LORD!!!! Thats like trying to take the wedgie out of a fat chics crack,
just ain't gonna happen.
If it wasn't for Anakin, Windu would of been totally unprepared in that
fight and Palp would of killed him, EASY! But of course it all worked
into Palp's plan and goofy Windu walked right into it.
Maybe if he would of listened to Qui-Gon, he'd still have his stupid
hand, and his life. But hey, atleast he died THINKING he had defeated a
sith lord, too bad he was too stupid to see the joke was on him.
If the #1 (Yoda) couldn't beat Palp , what the hell do you think the #2
would of done? He would have not defeated Anakin. The only reason Obi
won was because Vader was blinded by his rage.
But of course Windu is suppose to be a little close to the dark side in
his fighting style. And thus in those styles, Windu's wanna be dark side
style, vs. Vader's pure dark side style. Vader/Anakin hands down!

It's precisely because the Republic was full of gullible people like this
that the Chancellor was able to gain power so easily.

Agreed.
It's clear that Palpatine "allowed" Mace to have the upper hand to see
the Anakin conversion through. Notice how he didn't become "defeated"
until the moment that Anakin arrived. And even though he used his
lightning against Windu before Anakin turned, this could be seen as an
excuse to reveal his true face and use the "deformed" ploy to win
sympathy in the Senate.
If none of this were enough for the doubters, Palpatine claimed to be
too weary to defend himself against Mace's lightsaber attack before
Anakin "saved" him by slicing off Mace's arm. And what did he do the
SECOND after Mace's arm went flying off? He instantly unleashed a
massive barrage of lightning against him. I doubt he went from "empty"
to "full" that quickly.
