ST:TMP Director's Edition audio/video unsynchronized [message #212975] Do, 02 Februar 2006 06:26

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I rented ST:TMP on
Wednesday, and I first noticed that the audio lagged a split-second
behind the video after Kirk's first visit to the bridge, when Uhura is
speaking with the alien crewmember. I especially noticed the problem in
the next scene during Kirk and Decker's exchange in Engineering. The
audio noticably lags behind the video at various points throughout the
rest of the film.

Why wasn't this spotted and corrected prior to the DVD being released?

That is usually an issue with the player and the individual disc - my copy
plays perfectly on my Denon 2200. Make sure the surface of the DVD is clean
and free of scratches; dirt and scratches will cause the effect you mention.
There is also known issues with some discs and some players - it's not an
exact science.

Works fine on my DVD player (and probably dozens of others too.)

My DVD player is new, but the disc is a library rental. Maybe that's
the reason?

I'm not sure how the information is encoded on the disc, but I have two DVD
players, and I've had A/V sync problems with several discs on one of them,
but the other one plays them fine. Go figure....

Well, I removed the disc and re-inserted it, and it played fine.

Oddly enough, the problem started happening on the bonus features disc
later.

More than likely. Rental discs can sometimes be atrocious (although the
big name stores like Blockbuster and Rogers seem to be good from my
experience.) Every now and then, though...

Well, it's happened on another DVD that I rented from the library, too,
so it's either 2 bad discs or my new DVD player that's bad.

Don't you ever LOOK at the disc before inserting it into your drive?

No? That's a tad dangerous, don'tcha think? ;)

But then - I never get my DVD's from the library anymore, because they are
SOOOO famous for "attracting" everything under the sun on them, from messy
fingerprints to soda.
