For you Pierce Brosnan fans, his new movie "The Matador" expands into
wide release (to nearly 900 theaters) tomorrow on Friday, Jan. 27.
It's gotten excellent reviews, and Pierce was nominated for a Golden
Globe for his comedic performance (he didn't win, though). It most
likely won't do as well box office-wise as any of his Bond films (each
of which generated well over $100 million domestically) or even The
Thomas Crown Affair (nearly $70 million) but it should hopefully do
better than After the Sunset (under $30 million) and give Brosnan the
credibility to get even more interesting roles later on and not be
typecast by 007.
I wonder how many Bond fans will flock to the theaters to see the
Matador tomorrow simply out of anger toward Eon and the Daniel Craig
casting? ;-)
-Frank
P.S. "Munich," which Daniel Craig plays a supporting role, has gotten
great reviews but has struggled a bit at the box office (under $40
million domestically) despite the name of Steven Spielberg as the
director.

God forbid that both "The Matador" and CS are hits, get great reviews,
and allow both actors to prosper -- then they'll be nobody to root
against in this newsgroup.

I saw "The Matador" a few weeks ago in Chicago. Brosnan is excellent, and
the film highly recommended.

It was shown at the London Film Festival last October (missed it).
Doesn't open here until 24th Feb.

Yeah, like people flocked to see 'The Lawnmower Man' because they were
angry that Timothy Dalton had got the role of Bond instead of Brosnan.
I mean, all best wishes for Brosnan's post-Bond career, and I'm very
much looking forward to seeing 'The Matador', but to use its success or
otherwise as a barometer of people's attitudes towards Craig is
stretching a point somewhat.

It's a dark, politically controversial movie which has also been the
subject of a boycott campaign. I don't think it's altogether
surprising that its success at the box-office has been hurt as a
result.

I'm not a big Brosnan fan, and his incessant whining after the Bond
producers dumped him was embarassing. The guy couldn't resist jabbing them
during every interview. The Matador looks interesting so I'll probably rent
the DVD. His body of work as an actor leaves a bit to be desired, to date.
But let's face it, for a guy who was dubbed to be Connery's heir to the Bond
throne, the movies did not live up to expectations.

Um, dude? How can it have success or not at the box office when today
is it's opening nationwide? $40 mil in limited release is nothing to
sneeze at and hardly a box office failure when it has only played on
525 screens in just 4 US cities. It's per-screen limited release was
the second highest of 2005. That's a box office failure?
My mistake... You'er just looking for controversy and not supporting
your statements with well-reasoned valid logic. Next time find out
more than JUST a dollar figure. Today is the nationwide release and,
if 525 screens in 4 US cities are any indication, it should do
quite-well.

"Munich" has actually been in wide release for 3 weeks now. It opened
in limited release (about 500 theaters) on 12/23 and expanded into wide
release (about 1500 theaters) on 1/6.

I don't think they have a clue how to market it, because it isn't about
the actual Olympic event, but a supposed aftermath.
Being a Spielberg film, they probably would've been better off
plastering his name all over the posters and just opening it in 3000
theaters. I think they were/are counting on a lot of awards buzz, but
the critical response has been kind of mixed. I think the politics of
the film are getting reviewed more than it is.
Still, I'm Spielberg will be glad to know that the success or failure
of his movie comes down to whether Bond fans like Daniel Craig or not.

I said nationwide (reread it). 1500 screens is still a limited
release, not a wide release and definitely not a nationwide release.
The typical movie releases on between 3200 and 3500 screens (more than
2x what Munich is playing on) to be classed as Nationwide (that would
be the US "nation"). Again I say your comparison is neither
well-resoned nor logical. It's been in a slightly wider release for
all of 3 weeks, but still less than a dozen cities or so and you think
this allows it to be qualified as a box office failure. If it had been
in nationwide release, it would have topped $90 million (double the
income for the last three weeks and 6 fold it for the first two).
Check your box office mojo numbers and you'll see it's original opening
weekend (limited release) was #20. Not shabby for a "box office
failure." Let's see what this weekend brings when it truly wide
releases head to head with Matador.

Um, hate to ask this, but what do the box-office returns of, say,
'Zardoz', 'Universal Soldier', 'The Naked Face', 'Hawks', ''Grey Owl',
etc, tell us about the skill or popularity of any of the Bond actors?
Is this discussion, in fact, leading anywhere?

That while it's important for actors to carefully select their roles,
ex-Bonds should be particularly discerning as they already have baggage
with the audience?

Especially films they were in BEFORE they became Bond. How did THE
FOURTH PROTOCOL do before GOLDENEYE?
How did DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE do before DR. NO?

You'd be surprised how few actors have that option. Unless an actor is
willing and able to finance or produce a project himself, he doesn't
really get to pick and choose which roles he plays. Most of the time,
it comes down to what other people are willing to offer and whether an
actor is available or not, and often the pickings are mighty slim. All
those movies I mentioned were most likely the best offers those actors
had at the time, and the only other options they had were to do
something even worse or not to work at all. (This isn't even to
mention the fact that a project which looks promising on paper can very
often turn out to be a disaster once it reaches the screen.)

Indeed. It's easy to see how Sean Connery was enticed into ZARDOZ
(a role offered to him only after Burt Reynolds turned it down). John
Boorman was the director of the brilliant POINT BLANK, HELL IN THE
PACIFIC and had just received an Academy Award nomination for
DELIVERANCE. Now he had an idea to make a satirical Sci-Fi fantasy....
So many actors have landed big roles as a fluke. Richard Gere built an
entire career from parts John Travolta turned down. Even some of
Connery's later roles came as a result of actors either turning them down
(O'Toole and Finney for NAME OF THE ROSE) or dropping out due to
illness (Klaus Maria Brandauer in HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER).

Just found out that "The Matador" made $1 million on Friday (projected
weekend gross: about $4 million). "Bog Momma's House 2" made $8.25
million (projected weekend gross: $28 million).
Therefore, Martin Lawrence should be the next Bond.
Actually, I'm mildly surprised looking at Brosnan's career. He's had
two post-Bond films so far -- "After the Sunset" made $28 million and
"Laws of Attraction only made $17 million, total.
Interestingly, his biggest grossing film to date was not a Bond film,
but "Mrs. Doubtfire" which made $50 million more than his biggest Bond
film, and a decade earlier, in which he played a supporting role.
Sort of shows you where our all-consuming "most popular" arguments are
kind of small in the big picture.

I'm sure most posters knew I was joking in my original post about The
Matador.
Anyway, Matador isn't going to set any box-office records anytime soon,
but it did get $3.6 million from just under 900 theaters last weekend,
which isn't *that* bad (equivalent to $11 million from 3000 theaters).
It's made about $6 million after 5 weeks of release, with the first 4
weeks playing at fewer than 100 theaters. I doubt Pierce cares about
box-office anymore anyway, with 4 Bond movies grossing $100
million-plus (domestically) under his belt.
Also, "Munich" got nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and a few
other Academy Awards, which may bump up it's box office total more than
usual the next few weeks and expose Daniel Craig to a few million more
people before CR starts. We'll see.
