Hi everyone,
I've been a member of this newsgroup for some time, but I have never posted
before, simply because I enjoy Star Trek (even Voyager!), but don't have
nearly as much knowledge of the series as the rest of the people who post
here. Nevertheless, in an attempt to dig deeper into the core of what I
think is a fascinating phenomenon (i.e. Trek fandom), toward which I find
myself drawn, I've decided to write a term paper about Trek fans for my
Cultural Anthropology class. My thesis is that Trek fans form a society,
and I'm trying to uncover the "root principles" of Trek society. That means
that I need to find the core principles upon which the world of Trek is
built, and explain how the fan society grew from it. So, my question to all
of you is, what are the core values of Star Trek. I would also appreciate
suggestions of episodes to watch that demonstrate these values. Any help at
all would be great. But also, if anyone is offended by this, I want them to
know that I don't mean to pry- and that the paper will be respectful- as
respectful as if I were doing fieldwork in a foreign country. (I guess this
newsgroup could be seen as a metaphorical foreign country).
Thanks,
Sally

Optimism.
That we will make it.
That we will unite despite our differences and overcome our problems.
Be they social or technological.
That no dream is impossible.
In the sixties just having a black officer on the bridge was a huge
thing. Its not so much "Trek society", as it is human society.
Where are we going? what do we want to become?
It takes courage to dream big these days. It takes courage to imagine
what we can become. What we are capable of. We owe the generations
after us the same big dreams that were given to us. Fear of the
unknown is not the problem, it is fear of what we are capable of. To
achieve our full potential. What if we actually tried? What if?
Here is a letter I wrote for TrekUnited to save Enteprise from
cancellation. Well we failed. But this letter explains best why I
think Trek appeals to so many and is important. Just ignore
the campaign stuff towards the end. Hope it helps.
Individual epsisodes? jeez so many, I dont have them memorized or
anything. Im sure someone else can name some good ones.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"The visions we present to our children shape the future. It matters
what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies.
Dreams are maps. Our children long for realistic maps of a future they
(and we) can be proud of.
Where are the cartographers of human purpose?" ~ Carl Sagan
An invitation awaits those who know the answer to that question.
The human race is driven by imagination. It inspires us to try things
never done before. We have imaginations for a *reason*. It separates
us from all other species on Earth. We can imagine what we want to be,
and if we can dream it, we can do it eventually.
We explore in our minds first in many ways. We create art, write books
and make films. It matters not if it is an ancient story teller around
the fire
20,000 years ago or a modern digital plasma screen television today.
The wheel, mastery of fire, sailing vessels, medicine, powered flight,
nuclear power, satellites, someone had to imagine them all first.
We will never know who or what first inspired those early discoverers.
But Leonardo da Vinci, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Robert Heinlein, and
Arthur C. Clarke are names well known today. All inspired others with
their imaginings. Daring to ask… what if? We know their names.
One of the greatest imaginers unquestionably of our time is Gene
Roddenberry.
Gene Roddenberry through his creation Star Trek has inspired millions.
His incredible vision for us of an optimistic future is quite rare on
television as a whole today, but has been with us nearly 40 years now
and presently in it's latest incarnation "Star Trek: Enterprise".
Though Gene is gone from us now his vision remains intact.
Star Trek -inspires- many people, and those people make a difference.
Doctors, astronauts, engineers, pilots, computer designers,
physicists, astronomers, on and on. How do we know this? Just ask
them. These people make the world better because a fire was started in
their minds first. Because someone *imagined* what the world could be
like someday… a better world. It is a vision that has been successful
reaching all peoples and cultures around the world. It speaks to us
because it touches on the hopefulness and optimism that is intrinsic
in the human heart.
Star Trek is without question one of the "maps" Dr. Sagan spoke of.
And it is in serious trouble. Sadly "Star Trek: Enterprise" has been
cancelled by UPN, its home network. Wouldn't it be a shame if that
inspiration failed to find the next breakthrough scientist or doctor?
Or the first person to step foot onto Mars?
Are we not obligated to provide that inspiration to others as it was
given to us?
However there is hope. A strong campaign by fans has raised 3.12
million dollars in pledges thus far to fund a new fifth season of
Enterprise. Commercial aerospace entrepreneurs have contributed 3
million dollars to this endeavour. This has never happened before in
entertainment history. If Enterprise is not renewed the pledges will
be returned. It is a very serious effort for very special reasons,
some of them given here by the entrepreneurs…..
"Enterprise needs to be renewed, for the sake of fan loyalty, for
being quality TV, for bringing imagination and hope for a better
future to our homes, but over all that, for inspiring us so strongly
that we have fought all our adult lives to bring that future closer to
our children and to us."
"Bringing the future closer to our children and us."
Powerful words that cannot be ignored. There is every reason to
believe that the campaign can be successful. The executive producer of
Enterprise believes we can win, but we need your help.
Worldwide rallies have been held along with letter writing campaigns
and fans coming together at www.TrekUnited.com but we need your help.
Paramount, a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, has approached
Trek United for negotiations, a first-ever occurrence for fan-based
efforts but we need your help.
We invite you to please take a moment and visit www.trekunited.com and
learn more.
There are many ways to help. We invite you to please link to us on

discussion. Join us in chat at our site.
We look forward to your favorable reply, and thank you for your
consideration.

Well, if you're looking at Trek fandom culture, don't look at Trek: look at
Trek fans. Watch the film Trekkies, and I also highly recommend "Free
Enterprise", which is about two obsessive fictional Trek fans, based on the
two script writers themselves.
Good luck with your school project. And don't let a lack of knowledge keep
you from posting here; it never stopped me ;]
