I'm sure everyone remembers the scene where Homer and Marge are in bed
and Homer points to his new trophy case he's built just for the
bowling tournament trophy he thinks he's about to win, says something
like "I won't be needing -this- anymore!" and cuts to a shot of an
Oscar given to Don Ameche, with Ameche's name crossed out and Homer's
written in.
On the DVD commentary track for this episode, someone (Mirkin,
perhaps) says that the Oscar was originally supposed to have another
actor's name on it, but that the actor was murdered and the name was
changed to Don Ameche because they were afraid it might look like
Homer had killed the actor to obtain the Oscar. Matt Groening sounds
like he says the actor's name, but it's mumbled so much that I can't
make out what he says - it almost sounds like "Abe Vigoda," but that
can't be right given that he's still alive and I don't think he ever
won an Oscar. I tried Googling for Oscar-winning actors who were
murdered but couldn't come up with anything - so does anybody have any
idea who the murdered actor in question might have been?

Dr. Haing S. Ngor, who received a Supporting Actor Oscar for "The
Killing Fields" (1984). Both Fox airings did have Ngor's name on the
Oscar, even though the second airing was a couple of months after he
was killed.
I think that the name on the Oscar was blurred out for a time in
syndication.
