| My Imaginary Diseases rant [message #207777] |

While we all dream of what the vaults might contain, we all handle it
in different ways.
Over the past decade, many of us have gone from expectation to hope,
bitterness, frustration, anger, exhaustion, etc., waiting for that
transcendent release that never comes.
Me? I decided a long time ago not to expect anything. If I don't
expect anything, I won't be disappointed, right? (Of course, this is
what made the Roxy trailer especially cruel. It even gives a guy like
me hope.)
So, anyway, while many of you have snatched up any new release that
has come down the pike, I've been reading the liner notes on the
website, pouring over track listings, listening to samples, asking
myself "Do I really want this thing? Will a really listen to this?"
I might talk myself into buying it months later, only to like but a
handful of tracks. (Don't look for my name in the FZ:OZ liner notes.
It isn't there.)
In recent years, I've been happy with the new DVDs, but have shown no
interest whatsoever in Joe's Corsaga and mild interest in anything
else.
So, about a month ago, I visit zappa.com (I don't remember why) and I
see this new graphic for Imaginary Diseases. "Imaginary Diseases? A
new release? Didn't they just come out with Joe's XMasage? So, what
the fuck is this?"
"Petit Wazoo? Hmmm, interesting. Here's a clip. Damn! That sounds
pretty damn good. I may have to order this thing."
So, fast forward to tonight. ID finally shows up in my mailbox.
First thing I notice is that it is a simple but beautiful package that
contains the CD.
I give it a listen and it's absoltutely wonderful. I can't believe
how good it is. I become so lost in the music, that I look up after
what feels like a couple of minutes into "Farther O'Blivion" only to
discover that eight minutes have elapsed and I'm halfway through it.
Three minutes into "D.C. Boogie" I'm on the verge of tears. This
music is absolutely beautiful.
Now, while someone like Biffy has been buying new Zappa albums upon
release for the past few decades, I've basically been going forward
into the past. I only started discovering FZ's music in the late
80's. I think the first FZ album that I bought at the time it was
released was Civilization Phaze III.
So, as my mind drifts back, I find it difficult to remember the last
time I liked a new FZ album this much. I didn't like EIHN this much.
I didn't like FZ:OZ this much. Hell, I don't think I even liked
Lather, The Lost Episodes, or CPIII this much.
In fact, the last time I remember being this happy with a newly
acquired FZ album was when I won THE ENTIRE YCDTOSA SET in a radio
contest 12 years ago.
All of this might sound like insane hyberbole, but I can't find enough
superlatives to express how much I love this CD. I may not listen to
another one for the next month.
One of the first opinions expressed on this ng about ID was by Stan
Ivester, who proclaimed, "It's magnificent". The few exchanges that
I've had with Stan on this ng have usually been disagreements about
politics, but, in this case, I agree with him completely.
I know, some of you are going to listen to this CD and say, "I don't
see what Mike is going on about. It's okay, but not THAT great."
That's cool. You're entitled to your opinion. All I know is that I
haven't been this happy with a new FZ CD in a very long time. I
haven't been spending my time pining away for new releases, but,
nevertheless, this is one of the CDs that I've been waiting for.
Imaginary Diseases rules!

I was thinking the same thing--am i entitled to like a heavily-edited
live 63 min. compilation from '72 with so much off-the-cuff jamming on
it--I am.
But i could see how fans of the early-eighties bands might not like this
as much as me. ID has some great "loose" moments on it for those who can
get into that and don't mind the absence of any vocals.

Clearly this is a release that appeals to fans of the instrumental
stuff on Chunga, Waka Jawaka, Grand Wazoo, and Roxy. (Gee, who likes
that stuff?) I like the eighties stuff, too, but this stuff is
excellent.
I'm not a "complete unedited concert" guy. I like that Frank tried to
edit things for maximum impact, even if I may not agree with all of
his edits.
I'm glad there aren't any vocals. The music is great without them.

I like ID although at first listen I didn't do back flips.
It doesn't have tons of textural variation and is heavy on the long
guitar solos. In fact I was a little surprised that the horn section
seems absent for a fair amount of it.
That's after just one listen though. Then I slapped in Roxy and
YCDTOSA #2. I just got a CD player in my car, if you can believe it,
making my 45 minute commute somewhat more manageable.
One thing I have always wondered about is the Roxy version of the Bebop
Tango. It is different than every other version I have heard. Seems
way up tempo and the drums are a bit out of control esp. at the
beginning. Never mind the dance contest but I am talking about the
very beginning.
More profound revelations about ID later I'm sure.

The other fall '73 versions are similar, especially 11/18/73.

On a completely unrelated note, when did FZ STOP using the
"tooty-frooty" intro to "Pound for A Brown"?

Hmm - did he use it with the Flo & Eddie bands? AFAIK he used it
through the end of the original Mothers, but not from '75 onward, and
the piece was not performed in 72-74.

How would you characterize the intro as performed on The Yellow Shark CD?

If one accepts Gary's characterization of the 60's intro as
"tooty-frooty," one must acknowledge that this Ensemble Modern
arrangement represents a resurgence of tooty-frootiness.

Heh, I read that somewhere else, I realize it is very sophisticated
musically.
Perhaps I shoulda narrowed my focus to bands that FZ himself played in.
As in rocke musicke settings.
