Imaginary Diseases CD [message #207659] Mi, 18 Januar 2006 18:28

It's magnificent.

The structure of the collection seems to be to alternate more
"composed" songs like Farther O'Blivion with more bluesy "improvised"
tracks like D.C. Boogie. Total time just over 63 minutes, the
equivalent of a double-LP, and no boring vocals to skip through.

My fave so far is the closing track, "Montreal," basically a very
lively FZ solo with decorative interjections from the horns.

No keyboard player or percussionist in this band, but the bass and
drums do just fine, with most of the emphasis on the horns and guitars.

If you've been boycotting the ZFT releases, now is the time to give it
up and order this li'l sucker. It is incredible.

Sound quality isn't perfect, but it's very clean and clear and
certainly a major improvement over the cassettes of this band that I've
been listening to for decades.

Yer welcome.

Also, the tracks are put together like a "real" FZ concert: audience
stuff at the beginning--sounds like Frank conducting the crowd--and
Frank saying bye after the next-to-last piece, with the final number
presented as an encore.

The whole thing was obviously put together with love and respect for
Frank's legacy and, while I would have loved to have even more, this is
a major release and a beautiful opening into one of Zappa's most
interesting bands.

Fifteen bucks plus postage? Bargain of the century.

I listened to ID at work today, and those horn interjections got me
wondering. They seem more arranged than improvised. I sort of wonder if
this track came from the end of some song rather than being a standalone
jam like the DC and KC tracks (FZShows does not list the Montreal
concert--first one of the tour, correct?--as being in circulation, so
maybe we won't actually know for a while.. if ever.. unless Joe wants to
say something about it..)

And the first and last tracks apparently even come from cassette masters
rather than 4-track reels. You can hardly tell, though ("Montreal" does
sound ever so slightly rougher than the other tracks, but not
drastically so.. barely even noticeably so).

A quote from the Mothers Home Journal (reprinted in Michael Gray's
book, I believe) has the '73 band listening to a recording of their
first show and FZ commenting that it was much better than the debut of
the last band. Kinda funny to think that we're now getting to hear
bits from the debut of the last band (unless he was thinking of the
first Grand Wazoo gig in Sept '72 at the Hollywood Bowl).

Montréal was indeed the first concert of the tour. See
<http://members.shaw.ca/fz-pomd/wazoo/pwitin.html>.

Although no recording is in circulation, there are several reviews at
<http://members.shaw.ca/fz-pomd/wazoo/pwrev.html>. The one in French
<http://members.shaw.ca/fz-pomd/wazoo/pwrev.html#champagne> mentions
audience participation.

Anyway, professionally-recorded soundboard cassettes are likely to sound
better than surreptitiously-recorded audience cassettes, let alone
copies of copies of copies of the latter.

One can infer from the liner notes that this album is just the
beginning . . .

(of course, inferences can be misleading)

Finally got my copy last night - very nice. Encore!

Haven't heard it all the way through yet (it's in my car, and it
doesn't take me long to drive to work), but what I have heard is
Magnificent with a capital M, as Frank used to say, as big as you!
"Farther O'Blivion," heard in retrospect, almost sounds like a "Zappa
Medley." Ahh, There's Be-bop Tango...no, wait that's Cucamonga...no,
wait. And what I've heard of Jim Gordon's drumming so far just goes to
make you feel sad that the guy's so fucked up.

I mostly remember him from the inside cover of the "Layla" album,
wearing a blue shirt with intense sweat circles under the arrums, man
you could SMELL that thing just by looking at it!

Just received my copy.
Pretty fast for getting all the way to Australia, although I DID pre-order.
WAsn't too chuffed about the flimsy post-pack considering there's no
jewel-casethe stop the cardboard sleeve from getting bent and ruined.
Luckily it survived the trip a-okay.

Going to pop it in the cd-player now...
Excitement is not a great enough word...

60 minutes = a double-LP? I don't think so. Most LPs were 20+min per
side so a typical double-LP would be at least 80 mins.

I'll order the Roxy DVD if an when its released.

Not for most Zappa albums. How long are Tinseltown Rebellion, You Are
What You Is, Sheik Yerbouti and Roxy & Elswhere among others? FZ
generally preferred to stay under 20 minutes per side (note that
non-double albums such as Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, Drowning With
and Man From Utopia are under 40 minutes), hoping to get more volume and
better sound quality out of vinyl mastering.
