This is the poll for the Star Trek movies.
Here's how it works. You assign a grade of 1 to 10 for each movie.
When I conclude the poll (probably in a month or two), I'll average
the grades and post the results in descending order.
M01 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
M02 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
M03 Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
M04 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
M05 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
M06 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
M07 Star Trek: Generations
M08 Star Trek: First Contact
M09 Star Trek: Insurrection
M10 Star Trek: Nemesis

I can't resist this one. Assuming that the 1-10 grading is in relation to the
other movies...
6 M01 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
10 M02 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
3 M03 Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
3 M04 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
1* M05 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
9 M06 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
4 M07 Star Trek: Generations
7 M08 Star Trek: First Contact
8 M09 Star Trek: Insurrection
3 M10 Star Trek: Nemesis
* only because I'm guessing that a grade lower than "1" is not allowable.

The best of both TOS and TNG:
1. Has to be Wrath of Khan. None of this "save the whale" or any swipe at
20th century culture. I wish all of the movies were this good. The scene of
Spock dying was particularly good. Hate to say it, but the only thing that
ruins the scene is the fact he came back to life.
2.TNG: Has to be First Contact. Almost by default, since none of the other
three were movie worthy. Also, like Khan, First Contact was a great story.

My friend, Matt, said it better:
"Was that the one where they had the ship, and the heroes did the
things to stop the villains?"
I think he was talking about an episode, though.

Your subject says "favorite movie poll", which makes it sound like you
want a ranked list, but your instructions seem to indicate otherwise.
The respondents are more or less split on the interpretation. Maybe
your subject line should be more specific, especially since you're
cross-posting to rec.arts.tv, and "favorite movie poll" is pretty vague
anyway...

Ok, I'm ranking them and assigning number grades too. Pay attention to
whichever scoring method you want.
NB: First Contact is the only one of the four TNG movies that I've
bothered to watch more than once, or anywhere close to recently, so my
opinions on the others are based on impressions from memory only (and I
hardly remember Insurrection at all).
9.0 - M02 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
8.5 - M04 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
8.0 - M06 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
6.5 - M03 Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
6.5 - M08 Star Trek: First Contact
6.0 - M07 Star Trek: Generations
4.0 - M05 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
3.5 - M09 Star Trek: Insurrection
3.0 - M01 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
1.0 - M10 Star Trek: Nemesis

I always have a tough time ranking the movies. My opinions on them
change every time I watch one of them. I like them all to some
degree, for different reasons. TFF is terrible, but actually has some
good moments and missed opportunities, and there's a wide gulf between
it and "2nd worst."
Anyway, my grades and some comments:
> Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Score: 6
I base this on the Director's Edition DVD. It is wholly unique among
Trek films, but works in its own way. It's more contemplative, and
attempts to inspire awe at the mystery of the unknown. However, it
doesn't escape the boredom factor entirely. Many of those sequences
just go on for too long.
> Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Score: 9
The best of the TOS films. Khan is the greatest villain the films
have ever seen. The cat and mouse game in the nebula is the way
Sci-Fi space battles should be. My one major gripe is with some of
the supporting characters: the Marcuses and Chippendale dancers. They
gave unconvincing and sometimes corny performances. Kirstie Alley was
superb, however, as was Shatner.
> Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Score: 5
Christopher Lloyd was inspired in this film, as we see the first major
role given to a Klingon in the Bumpy Head(tm) era. Of course, the
premise of the movie is silly and full of inconsistencies used for
plot convenience. Robin Curtis really annoys me here, as does the
fake looking planet set. (And why does Curtis look better in the
interviews, 20 years later, than she does in the film?)
> Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Score: 8
If they wanted to spoof the 80's in Star Trek they could do no better
job today. For this reason, I feel this film has aged better than
many seem to think. I mean: save the whales, bad punk rock, big hair,
Russkie paranoia -- it has everything we'd make fun of in the 80's.
Gillian gets on my nerves occasionally, but they play up the "fish out
of water" scenario perfectly.
> Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Score: 2
Oh what could have been. So much is wrong here, it's hard to know
where to begin, so I won't. It's been well documented. However, the
camping bits don't bug me as much as you'd think, and there is some
good Kirk/Spock/McCoy interplay to be found here.
> Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Score: 8
Great way for the old crew to go out. It had a big story with
Galactic implications, and the best guest star performances since
Khan. Christopher Plummer steals every scene he's in. Some of the
prison sequence falls into standard Trek formula, but it's ok for one
last time.
> Star Trek: Generations
Score: 7
They simply tried to do too much in Generations. Malcolm McDowall's
Soran is a standout among Trek villains, but the Klingon sisters were
a waste of screen space. Killing Kirk bugs me more now than it did
back in 1994 (I'm a big TOS fan now), and feels like a gigantic missed
opportunity. The destruction of the D is a great sequence, and it was
fun to see Picard get into the action more. There were nice character
bits sprinkled throughout the film.
> Star Trek: First Contact
Score: 10
Yup, my favorite. There just isn't much to find wrong with this one.
Frakes did a flat out amazing job as a first time director, especially
of a movie on this scale. The separate plot lines weaved together
nicely. This was before the Borgsploitation went overboard on Voyager
(and probably why it did), and the Borg were at their best here.
> Star Trek: Insurrection
Score: 6
As has been pointed out countless times, this felt like it should have
been done as a two part episode rather than a motion picture. If
viewed on those terms, I think it would be a very good two parter. It
just wasn't "grand" enough for the big screen. It did, on the other
hand, very much feel like it belonged to TNG, with all the good and
bad that implies. The bad guys were too cliché, the morality too
blunt. But we were treated to the crew once again fighting the good
fight.
> Star Trek: Nemesis
Score: 9
Get your tar and feathers ready! My only problems with this film are
early on: the wedding scene and the silly chase in the alien desert.
Once Shinzon enters the scene, it gets interesting. There is some
nice play between Shinzon and Picard, and the action set pieces were
spectacular. The Romulan turmoil provided a nice jumping off point.
It is too bad it wasn't tied in more with the events of TNG, but if
that means no Sela I'm ok with it.

Some comic had a generic joke that went something like "Two guys go
into a bar and sit down. The first guy says something to the second
guy. The second guy turns to the first guy and says something funny."
George Carlin, I think, in one of his books.
You could get even more vague: Was that the movie with the protagonist
and the antagonist and there's all this conflict?"
