The news has been screaming alot about this the last year or so
and I wonder? Is it truly anything to worry about or is it the
usual sensationalism one finds in news these days?

Pardon me if I am slightly side-stepping the question, but I'd just like to
point out something that I think is rather ridiculus about the whole topic.
Many countries are now stockpilling the vaccines to the 'new age plague' as
I like to call it, but for the majority of them, by the time the flu
actually reaches their country, it would have mutated beyond it's present
stage and there is a likley chance that the current vaccine will have no
effect whatsoever...
But still, yes, the flu is something that would concern many of us,
regardless of how remote or well-protected out country is.

That does seem odd.

It's two things. First, it's a blatant political ploy to distract the
media and public for a time. Second, it's also the real deal; the
deadliest variants of flu pandemics on record have always come from
mutations of bird flus and we are overdue for the next real pandemic.

What's it a ploy to distract us from?

and I guess it's time to start being serious about my flu shots...

It's not that odd. Flu mutates form approximately once every two weeks
(or sooner). That's why the current efforts are toward a vaccine that
protects not against a specific version but rather against specific
characteristics; it's designed not to prevent infection, but rather to
give enough of an advance edge to survive it.

The bird flu is the source of every severe flu pandemic medical history
has been able to record. This is because of two factors. The first
being, since it's from another species, we have very little predisposed
immunity to it thus it will be far deadlier per case. Second, if it
hits a highly contagious form it will spread faster than containment
efforts. This is how it worked every time in the past, and with modern
transportation methods and an increased/increasing population density
the threat is greater than ever.

Joyful. And am I correct in believing that "flue" is actually
short for "influenza" ?

It's a ploy to distract us from whatever poilitical situation we are
not supposed to pay attention to. In this case Bush's steady decline
in popularity, and by association the Republican Party's decline.

And don't worry about the shots hurting. It hurts about as much as a
tetanus shot, and those are virtually painless.

From an immediate perspective, it's nothing; the current bird flu
variants popping up here and there are all low-risk to spread out of
control. From a long-term perspective, it's one of the CDC's
worst-case scenarios as a near-certainty.

My tetanus shot was pretty painful, however, i was referring the
the situation I could be in if I continued to neglect my shots,
not the pain of the shot itself :)

Ah. Well, they currently only recommend high-risk cases to go for the
current shot. Being as I have a chronic kidney condition, diabetic
tendencies, and severe allergies, I was well-advised to get it myself -
so I did.

The numbers from the last superflu pandemic were staggering, but
nothing compared to the Plague. Fortunately, the Plague is no longer
considered a serious threat at current technological levels; it's
readily contained.

Of course, all such points rely on a one-by-one case evaluation. Taken
from the broader standpoint, it's not a matter of if so much as when;
so many instances going around make for a near-certainty the highly
deadly and contagious variant will come forward. Once spread around,
it won't matter if it's highly contagious or not - it will be spread
far and wide enough to simply re-emerge in wave after wave for several
months, as has happened with each and every prior flu pandemic to date.

I get sick easily, hence I consider myself high risk.

You might inquire with a doctor about that. There's likely another
factor involved.

Yup. Weaponized plague, used in attacks. There's also a couple cases
that occur naturally every year. In all cases, easily contained and
controlled.

last major pandemic WW1, poor health/sanitation/warfare blamed
first documented case a Kansas Army training camp spring 1918
quickly spreading to other US military camps, those going to war
largest US contribution to World Peace in 1918 "Spanish flu"
agreed such will happen again eventually, such is nature
political expedience/policy need not exacerbate each occurrence
