I like some of that but alot of it just grates on my nerves; too
much of it has no real beat and just feels like noise :/

Some filk (White Plectrum especially), movie soundtracks, Beatles-style
rock (what's it really called?), Ray Lynch (whose music doesn't seem to
fit any one category), and lots of other stuff too.

Do you listen to the words, or leave it playing in the background as you
do something else? Enya's music, at least to me,... your experience

Trance music is O.K. but I don't see myself listening to it on a daily
basis and I never dug the club scenes...that and we just don'y have
any clubs that play that knid of music in my area.

Point me to a particular artist, and I'll check 'em out; I never know

Don't have an artist name for you, I'm not fan enough for that;

I hear that a lot about metal in general, especially the more
"progressive" metal. There's a beat, you just have to listen for it. I
promise!

As for me, here's a rather extensive, but by no means complete, list:

Classic rock: mostly progressive stuff like Pink Floyd, Led Zep', Yes,
Jethro Tull, Kansas, Styx (arguably progressive?), Moody Blues, King
Crimson, etc. Also tamer stuff... Tom Petty, etc

Metal: also progressive, mostly, or operatic. Nightwish, Manowar, Dream
Theater (*especially* Dream Theater). I like the occasional Dark
Tranquility song, too.

Contemporary Rock: I like a lot of popish stuff out of the
mid-90s... Semisonic, Matchbox 20, etc. I've got a weak spot for Guns
'n' Roses

Country: I dig "new-style" bluegrass. Basically Nickel Creek. Lots of
good musical arrangements. Great stuff.

New age/Electronica/etc: Enigma (dedicated Fanboy. I know trivia, for
gods' sake), Enya, Loreena Mckennit (*wonderful* stuff), a smattering
of other stuff...

Rap: One or two songs, maybe

and in a class by itself: Godspeed You! Black Emperor

It's possible it is just too fast for me. When I'm done listening
to it, I feel annoyed and irritated.

.... Autechre
,, mentioned them here before back a ways...

above i was specifically describing this (flash option doesnt appear to
work):
http://video.download.com/3800-11168_53-1978.html?tag=vdl_pr efs_watch_tmp

they do have listenable stuff like this:
http://www.sputnik7.com/vod/index.jsp?section=music&key= bsct

pretty sad that it seems the only way to find a good audio sample is to
find the video... with ads unfortunatly...
