No, I don't' play but I've heard disturbing rumors that this is
yet another game in which the ultimate evil is a dragon. Can
anyone confirm or deny this?

Playing it as Tauren in the Horde. Cool game, but i don't know anything
about dragons there, or ever saw one. It seems rare...

I was watching someone play WoW once, and they had a bit of a scare when
a beautiful black dragon (Lvl40 or so, I think) showed up in their
path. They had to be careful to get around it!
Based on what I know of the setting (from the other Warcraft
games... remember those? The ones that required thought?) Dragons are
typically units on the side of the horde, who, while often depicted as
the Bad Guys (tm), have their own sort of honor and such (especially
evident in Warcraft 3, which I need to get around to finishing).
And they *are* controllable units in the Warcraft series. But I suppose
it would break game balance in WoW to allow anyone to traipse around as
a dragon.

I don't play, but have friends who do. There is no single "ultimate
evil," but several of the high-level challenges involve dragon-slaying.
The rumors you've heard may be related to the one mentioned here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/28/sports/othersports/28vide. html?_r=1
(interestingly enough, a friend saw the headline and forwarded me that link
just a few hours ago...)
Dragons are not playable in WoW, nor are they (in general) selectable units
as in some of the previous Warcraft games. They are most often high-level
opponents to be slain. However, I understand there is a process by which
your character can have a hatchling follow them around as a sort of
familiar or something, so apparently they're not *all* bad...not having
actually played the game, however, that's about all I know.

ZOMG! Dragons... as an EVIL character! What a shock! *Gasp*
No really, why does everybody make such a fuss when a dragon is
portrayed as an evil creature? I mean, do you really expect dragons to
ONLY be portrayed some noble creature worthy of complete adoration and
respect?
Ah, such is the nature of this message board, with it's notable history
of "GRAR HYOOMANS! GRRR!!!" posts.

I'd like to see them properly portrayed. Some are evil, granted, but some
are good, and some are in between.

not sure what you were replying to,, but last i think was in this thread
was people wishing dragons were playable characters in the game, not
complaining that they were evil (least thats the way i was reading).
