Have one? Use a program for one? Flame Stryke and I were chatting
about Kookie Jar and his VERY long signature :) It's so long that
it actually gets cut off sometimes. Tell us about yours!
Mine? I don't use any programs and I wrap it at close to 72
characters manually.

Have one, used to use a program for it but that only works on Windoze
and I use Linux at least half the time now. Now I just change it
manually whenever I feel like it. *Sometime* I'm going to write a
program that would work under Linux or Windows.

Which one did you used to use? Why did you switch to Linux and how
long have you been using Linux?
And please, don't mis-spell Windows. It's a pet peeve of mine, but
something to keep in mind is that computers would be no where near
as accessible as they are now were it not for people like my
parents learning how to use them, and hence deciding to buy them.
And THAT never would have happened on a Linux system :) My mom is
57 and my dad 62.

Emacs Gnus includes the file of my choice (based on which group I'm
posting to) which is, specifically, at ~/.signature-afd. Wraps wherever
emacs defaults to wrapping it. Probably 80 characters.

I used to use one that I had written in Visual Basic. I switched to
Linux because I was fed up with all the "minor" Windows bugs that
Microsoft refuses to fix (and I mean that literally, I've seen bugs that
they *state on their web site* they will not fix). I've been using Linux
since September of last year.

I must admit, Windows did help make computers popular, and it's easy to
use when it works.
This post was going to be longer, but I've already had to retype it
twice due to power problems.

I just a text file on my computer that I copy and paste to the end of
all my posts. It's crue, but effective; and I don' have to worry about
programs truncating it, not that's it's ever happened before. I update
it whenever I feel it needs updating.

Software:
OS: Gentoo Linux (globally accepting ~x86, 'cause I'm crazy)
Kernel: Linux 2.6.14
Editor: Emacs
Mail/News Reader: Emacs (using Gnus)
Daily planner/calendar: Emacs (what can I say? it does everything!)
Windowing environment: X.org
Window manager: Fluxbox
Browser: Firefox, of course
Hardware:
Processor: AMD Athlon 2100+
Primary Memory: 1 Gb PC 3200 RAM
(currently underclocked because my BIOS is screwy)
Secondary Memory: 2 80 Gb Western Digital Caviar's partitioned into 3
RAID arrays (2 RAID-0, 1 RAID-1). Total useable space
95 Gb. May eventually upgrade these to SATA drives.
Networking: VIA VT6102 (Rhine-II based). Looking into Gigabit cards.
Video: Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE (NV36 chipset)
Audio: Standard onboard AC97 compliant (It's a VIA something or other, though)
Is that enough?

I've noticed that you only run into bugs in Windows when one of 3 things
happens:
1) You try to use the built-in software (Outlook Express, IE, MS Office)
2) You try to use 3rd party software. Not all, mind you, but a great
deal of it, especially some games.
3) You try to use really old hardware with it

I like to think of Windows as a "Gateway OS." It frustrates hapless
computer users into trying "harder" Operating Systems ;-)

I have a UPS for that. My monitor isn't hooked up to it, though, since I
have about 5 minutes of power while running the monitor, but about 15
minutes with only the computer..... Neither the router nor the cable modem
are on the UPS, though, so although I won't lose my message, I'd have to
wait for power to resume to post.

Mine is like that, but Kookie Jar rewrites the text file each minute,
putting a new quote in. That's why most of my messages, even one right

I used to have a video card with a PVR function - it could, if you were
lucky, record about one frame a minute. Worked fine if you just wanted
to watch, however.

Ah. Mine monitors those and cuts out surges..... Nice feature..... It
also has battery assist, so during brownouts, it merely suppliments the AC
voltage, which is also a nice feature.....

This works great to record. Saves them as mpg files, too, so they're easy
to watch and jump around in. I just wish it had commercial advance marking

Oh, #4. Using an old version of "new" Windows on brand spanking new hardware.
Windows XP Home (2002 edition (I.e. prior to SP1)) does no like most of the
hardware in my computer. It took going to Windows Updates for as long as the
computer would live (10-15 minutes) and downloading 3 to 4 updates, crashing,
and doing it again. I found that it was my video driver that was causing the
crash and that it took longer than the lifespan of the computer to download.
Fortunately I have my laptop. Since that my desktop has a lifespan of about 3
days of constant uptime before crashing.

Should I bother to update Windows? My computer generally doesn't
crash unless I'm playing a graphics intensive game. I've so far
quite honestly avoided it actually, scared that updating it just
might break something ><

No. The whole Mozilla project, of which Mozilla and Firefox are
both project branches, are Mozilla rebuilt from the ground up. The
largest difference between them is that Mozilla has considerably
more bundled software, such as a newsreader and email program than
Firefox. Users of Firefox tend to need to also get things like
Thunderbird. There are countless small differences however.
Especially since they branched several years ago.

Most of the windows updates are for security reasons, it is wise to
keep it up to date. Especually if you using any file shareing or P2P
software, or chat programs...

Same feature list as mine, basically. Have you ever used yours during a
power surge? Mine cuts out surges by cutting off power completely; the
battery is for blackouts and brownouts.
