What a shame [message #1446] Sa, 16 April 2005 12:56

Season four of Enterprise has been one of the best ever, of any Trek
series. That a Trek series can no longer muster a large enough audience
doesn't surprise me. It's really indicative of a changing atmosphere in
America. One devoid of imagination, but forever hungering for
degenerate images and thoughtless actions.

One good season (actually less than half was any good) does not make up
for 3 seasons of utter crap.

Let Enterprise die.

What a stupid thing to say, maybe in you own little option. Don't like it,
don't watch it and quit wasting your time and everyone else's by posting to
an Enterprise NG.
Ent is has finally hit it's stride this season, sorta like TNG and it's
first 2 abysmal seasons.

Amen on the lack of imagination of the public, but the viewers are hardly at
fault, at leant not totally. I feel that the suits at Paramount dropped the
ball a little, as well as Berman and Co.(although the latter only could do
so much with what they were working with).

The first mistake I think was made was taking Trek out of syndication and
onto UPN. TNG and DS9 were consistantly in the top five in syndication. Not
having to air against any one show every week certainly a factor in keeping
those two shows going.

And I'm sorry, but I KNOW Berman and Co. TRIED to improve the quality of the
show, and I thought for a while they were going to do it. I thought ending
this stupid "Temporal Cold War" was long over due, and the Soong trilogy was
perhaps the best shows since DS9 went off the air. But the creative staff
got lazy when the second round of new shows came about. The people who say
that all Trek is are "variants on the same 3 or 4 plot ideas" were once
again proven correct (the show about the guy who invented the transporter
immediately comes to mind). I think the the Soong and Vulcan conflict
trilogies were done in season one or two instead of season four, we'd
probably talking about season five actually happening. Unfortunately, what
we intend and what acutally happens are two different things altogether.

This blows the present Nielsen rating system out of the water.
It IS antiquated and inaccurate.

http://tinyurl.com/4nh2h

"For the past decade or so, watching television in America has been
defined by the families recruited by Nielsen Media Research who have
agreed to have an electronic meter attached to their televisions or to
record in a diary what shows they watch. This setup may not last much
longer. Just as programmers and advertisers are clamoring for a better
understanding of the television audience, a wave of new consumer
products has made it increasingly difficult to satisfy them. One day
this January I sat in a Greenwich Village workroom with Bob Luff, the
chief technology officer at Nielsen, as he pulled out gadget after
gadget to show me what he's up against. Luff seemed to view the modern
American home as a digital zoo where the lion is about to lie down
with the lamb: radio is going on the Web, TV is going on cellphones,
the Web is going on TV and everything, it seems, is moving to
video-on-demand (V.O.D.) and (quite possibly) the iPod and the
PlayStation Portable. ''Television and media,'' Luff said over the
noise of five sets tuned to five different channels, ''will change
more in the next 3 or 5 years than it's changed in the past 50.''"

"Or maybe not so funny. Nielsen's introduction of new electronic
television meters in the New York area last winter, for instance,
prompted a torrent of criticism from Fox Television, which saw the
local ratings (and potential revenue) of several of its programs
suddenly plummet. But this may prove a modest dust-up compared with
what comes next, if devices like the P.P.M. or data from millions of
set-top digital cable boxes reveal that what Americans are seeing and
hearing do not correspond to what the big measurement companies have
long been claiming."

Yeah, hit its "stride" just in time to die. Figures Beavis and Butthead

Given that B&B had prior experience on two or three other Trek shows,
the quality of Enterprise should not have been an issue from the
beginning. In other words, they knew what they were doing and f*cked it
up anyway.

Enterprise has always been underrated. DS9 was almost unbearable to
watch, most of the time, with it's drab over-enunciating captain and
annoying characters, such as the two Dax imbeciles. Ditto for Voyager,
which had the worst second in command in Trek history, Chakotay, and
two of the most annoying third and fourth characters ever, in Torres
and Paris.

And given the crap that B&B had previously done in Voyager and DS9, how

err..... no they didn't know what they were doing, Voyager proved that. Most

Berman had very little to do with DS9 and Bragga had absolutely nothing to
do with DS9. And it showed. The only thing I fault Berman for was not
firing Bragga back in TNG's run. V'ger and Ent would have been much better
shows had Bragga been elsewhere.

It is really a sad day. This is the first time in 18 years that a Star Trek
series is not on the air. I truly hope this is not the end of a legend.

I grew up with Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, etc. and thought nothing could
ever compare. In fact, I refused to watch the TNG until I happened to catch
the 3rd season finale - Best of Both Worlds. I don't know why but I had to
tune in and watch the start of season 4 - then I was hooked. I couldn't
believe that I had missed the 1st 3 seasons. As much as I liked Kirk, I grew
attached to Picard and his crew and even learned to like the Enterprise D.

I tried watching DS9, Voyager and even Enterprise. I made it thru the first
year of DS9, 2 years of Voyager and 2 years of Enterprise. Went to the ST
Convention in Las Vegas - and truly hoped that Enterprise would survive.

It just seems that after Gene Roddenbury passed, the series lost something.

I just hope that this isn't the end of Star Trek. To be quite honest, I'm
not sure if it can ever die. TOS came back years later as movies and even 2
computer games (Judgment Rites and 25th Anniversary - both of which I
played). TNG lasted 7 years, went off the air I think as the #2 rated
syndicated program.

I know Star Trek will live - if not on the air - in the hearts and minds of
us fans.

Take care everyone. Live Long and Prosper!! Engage and Make it So!!

And DS9 wasn't much better in the first two seasons. It had some great episodes
like "Duet" but it had many stinkers like "Move Along Home". Voyager wasn't
that good either in the first two seasons (and some say it never got better".
TOS was really the only Trek series that hit it out of the park from the start.

You're not on the logic train. What you stated could be applied to
other Trek series. That Enterprise's ratings showed no improvement this
season, despite stellar scripts and acting, is proof of that changed
atmosphere I spoke of. Americans are enamored, exclusively, with their
genitals, and infantile racket often referred to as 'music'.

Enterprise is underrated. It has been from the start.

Which has been my complaint. Enterprise has had some ot the best eps in
years (definately since DS9 went off the air. The show had it's moments,
folks). The problem is that the A.It was, as we say in the States, a day
late and a dollar short. A year or two in, less than great writing set in
and by the time season four came around, people stopped watching despite the
improved writing.

B.Even with the improved writing, UPN moved Enterprise to Friday, which is
pretty much the graveyard shift of the tv week. A sure fire way to kill a
show is to move it around the schedual so fans can' keep up on where to find
it.

Let's not forget also that B&B wanted to step away from the trek lores while
keeping the
fan base. They disregarded a large degree of trek history to do things their
own way. Neither
were TOS fans if I remember correctly. How long did it take for them to even
add Star Trek
to the name of the show?

Enterprise had a lot of untapped possibilities, especially with the arrival
of Manny Coto. it's
a shame it was cancelled now.

Must be true if the only retort you can come up with is spelling mistakes.
Weak.

So your cross posting to an Ent NG for what reason? You are s-m-r-t.

The only point it proves it the one you have on your head. I'll go slow; if
one has experience in writing and producing working to the best of their
ability, and it is utter crap, does not make one any better at writing and
producing any better material for another show.

Ent would have been better from the start if someone like Coto had been at
the helm, from the start.

Very good point, and another reason I dislike both Berman and Braga.
They referred to it as 'Enterprise' instead of advertising it as 'Star
Trek'. Huge blunder. Manny Coto, on the other hand, has done a
tremendous job this season.

Ahh apparently you can't, as that not how it's spelled. Again the only
retort you can come up with is spelling mistakes. Weak
Concentrate on spelling your own name properly, I beleive it's F-u-c-k-i-n-g
M-o-r-o-n.

No, but it means they should have known better and hired people who had
a clue.

Unlikely. B&B would still have been in charge. As can be seen this
season, B&B still meddle and it shows.

Yes it is. Queeg comes from the Caine Mutiny. Care to see the imdb
page again?

You must be dumber than I first thought. You're (note I spelled it
right) nowhere near spelling my name right. Say it slowly R-A-G-N-A-R.

So only people who slavishly think Enterprise is the best thing since
sliced bread should be allowed to post? Good thing you're (spelled it
right again) not in charge.

D-i-p S-h-i-t, nope that dosn't sound anything like F-u-c-k-i-n-g M-o-r-o-n.

Actually, that's an "inside joke" expression, sorry you didn't get it (not)
.... but if you think you are a loser then who am I to argue, as you seen to
want to endorse it so readily.
For the third time you can only come up with is spelling mistakes. Weak.

Give you head a shake, like B&B would do that.... NOTE: in order to "give
you head a shake" you must remove it from your ass.

Oh, well then I'll stop the spelling correction. Now about your grammar

Now you're (spelled it right again) repeating yourself.

I am a big Trek fan but I found Enterprise to be dry and dull. It has
nothing of being "devoid of imagination". It just got off on a bad start
IMHO. Season 4 may have been the best, but the show lost me since the
episode Extinction. I may catch up on reruns/DVD's.

Nothing compares to DS9 series as a whole..great series. And same goes for
Babylon 5 and most of the new BG (kind of got loopy with the needless
succumbing to sex in the latter part of Season 1).

I found DS9 to be somewhat bizarre, it's captain dull, and the Dax
girls and Dr. Basheer annoying. The Ferengi were moderately tolerable
(Quark), and Odo was OK. It was saved by it's 'extras'. The Cardassians
were more entertaining than the humans.

I beg to differ here, DS9 and Voy were well written and apart from a
couple of weak characters in both they were great to watch.

I thought a female captain was a good idea, they could have chosen a
better looking one though.
