| Carbonite freezing mistake with Han Solo - his hands were tied [message #204382] |

When Han goes into the freezer, his hands are tied! They are tied from
the begining of the scene. Yet after the freezing both of Han's hands
are reaching into the air, frozen in carbonite. Irwin Kirschner brags
about coaching Harrison Ford for the mold to fight the freezing (in the
Empire Strikes Back Director's commentary)... but it's a clear error in
continuity. They forgot his hands were supposed to be tied. It seems
like everyone forgot! It's not listed in the IMDB either.

It could be possible for the beginning of the freezing process to cause
the bindings to fail, giving Han enough time to go "Arrrgh" and throw
up his hands before being fully frozen.

Ugnaughts are clearly seen removing the binders before he's lowered into the
pit.

I did a quick check of the novelisation just to see if it said anything
there, but what it says is ...
The Ugmaughts rushed to his side and positioned
him on the platform, binding his arms and legs
tightly onto the hydraulic deck.
Maybe Ugnaughts are simply sloppy workers and didn't fasten them
properly. :-)

Looking at the DVD, they fiddle around in that area, but one of their
heads is blocking view. From the next shot, as they walk away from Han,
it seems his right hand is free; so I would say they did take off the
binders.

The binders are removed however he also has something around both biceps
that goes acorss his back so he can only move his arms from the elbow down.
But when he is unfrozen in the ROTJ at Jabba's palace the bindings are not
there.
Prehaps this form of binding is designed for carbonite freezing so that is
dissolves when during the process?

That's what I said about 18 hours ago. :-)

For what purpose? So they can risk him punching them when they
eventually unfreeze him? I guess they figure when you wake up from it
you are blind and disoriented anyway, so no biggie.

The freezing process isn't design for living things, so the bindings
(along with whatever container they normally use) could well be
designed to dissolve leaving just the frozen gas it was built to
function on - all ready for shipping.

Han Solo, upon waking from carbon freeze: "I can't see... hey my
binders are gone too... and what the hell happened to my underwear?!?!"
