Blaster sound effect puzzler [message #204309] Do, 19 Januar 2006 00:54

On a 1995 laserdisc of SW I dug up last week, when Luke and Leia are
stuck on that bridge thing fending off attackers with the blaster, when
she fires it it sounds like a blaster... and on my latest-version dvd
it sounds like a blaster. But I distinctly remember a version I've
seen where that sound effect instead was the same one used for Dirty
Harry's 44 magnum (that standard gun sound effect.) What was the last
version that still had that? The original?

The 1997 one? Hmmm I saw that in the theater twice and don't remember
it. I could swear I saw it on some tape version or on a TV broadcast.
You sure? Seems like a strange thing to put in, then take back out on
the dvd - an uncharacterisic gunshot sound coming out of a blaster.
Though to tell the truth it did sound cool !

I remember in one of the bhind the scenes type shows, the showed the escape
clip and it was filmed with a gunshot type sound for sound placement with
the blaster fire sound bite added in later.

Well, in several of the "Making Of..." videos (for Star Wars, Empire, and
even for Jedi) I remember whenever a "blaster" was shot a blank "gunshot"
could be heard and a puff of smoke come from the muzzle, my guess is that
the use of the "blank" was two-fold: 1) so the SPFX guys (and gals?) knew
where the "shot" began so they could add the cool red/green laser, and 2) so
the Sound FX guys would know when to add the "blaster" sound.

You may just be remembering seeing/hearing this effect while watching a
"Making Of..." special and associated it over the last 30 years with a scene
from one of the films...

It's the same syndrome of people "swearing" they saw "Episode IV" or even "A
New Hope" in the opening title crawl of "Star Wars" back in 1977 and not
when "Episode IV" was really added (during the re-release - 1978ish) or "A
New Hope" (just before "Empire's" release in 1980).

Nope, pretty sure it wasn't a "making of" as I don't recall ever
watching one, but it's possible... and they may have used blanks but
this was the very distinct Dirty-Harry sound effect, not just a blank
pop.

I remember it too. I assumed she hit something that popped or exploded.
I dunno, but I remember the gunshot.

It wasn't just one shot, it was everytime SHE fired the gun on that
ledge... it didn't do it when Luke fired it.
