I'd agree, despite thinking that war is not a good form of diplomacy,
but for quite a different reason.
Saddam was there as long as he was because a previous American
Government thought he was a good guy and gave him lots of money, weapons
and ammunition. When a man has a problem dog, its his job to deal with
it: George Bush I should have finished Saddam in 1991 and not left the
job for George Bush II.

A lot of the problems in Iran are the result of Mohammad Reza Shah being
there far too long. He was a nasty bastard with as unpleasant a bunch of
secret police (the Savak) as you'd find anywhere. I know: I visited Iran
twice in 77/78 and saw what was going on there.
When the shah was turfed out in 1953 that should have been that, but he
was put back by a CIA-engineered coup against the Prime Minister,
Mohammad Mossadegh. Oil and national power was involved: Mossadegh
(Time's Man of the Year, 1951) wanted to nationalize the Anglo-Iranian
Oil Company and not follow the US line in the area.

When you think about the Middle East and the general attitude to America
in that area, please bear in mind that:
- one small country, not a million miles from the Mediterranean Sea:
- gets more foreign aid from America that any other country in the
world despite being modern, prosperous and developed
- has atomic weapons but has never been investigated by the IAEA
- tells America what to do and think
- meanwhile America thinks it has the right to tell the rest of
the Middle East what they should do.
Its a simple matter of unfairness, Jim. Be even-handed to all countries
in the region and get a lot more respect and liking from them.

The problem with this analogy is that the police *were* acting and the
criminal activity had been controlled ten years ago. But the son decided
to go and give the guy across the street a good kicking anyway because
he was sure he must still be up to no good.
