In Episode III, how was Yoda able speak through the force to the spirit
of Qui-Gon Jinn? Does this have anything to do with the vanishing of
Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IV?

Qui-Gon Jinn was the first Jedi to learn how to become one with the
Force (ie. become a Jedi ghost). He then made contact with Yoda.
If you watch Episode III, towards the end, Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he
has more to learn from his old Master (Qui-Gon). Qui-Gon teaches both
Yoda and Obi-Wan how to become Jedi ghosts, which is why both of them
disappear when they die - in Obi-Wan's case the instant he dies and for
Yoda he fades away slowly.
They then help Anakin to become a Jedi ghost when he dies in Return of
the Jedi.

This "new" ability has to lead into the option of fading (transition
into the force.
My speculation of how the Qui-Gon contact initiated was tipped off in
AOTC. After watching ROTS, I happened to watch AOTC again. When Anakin
finally finds his mother and she then dies, we note the emotions and
thoughts shifting in Anakin before he starts Tusken Raider-cide. The
scene then shifts to Yoda in the Jedi "meditation(?)" chamber, pondering
Yoda and Jedi ruminations. Yoda senses the shift within Anakin and we
know this by some ethereal voice protesting "No!". Whose voice was it???
It was Qui-Gon's voice coming back from the nether world of the Force.
That tips off the new ability to learn and communicate with those that
have passed on...
My thought is that Luke must be "really" strong with the Force, as he
gains this ability really fast. Whereas it takes "training in solitude"
for Obi-Wan to get it...

Well, to be clear, Qui-Gon was studying The Journal Of The Whills and was
killed by Darth Maul in Episode I *before* he completed his study, so he
never learned the *full secret* of how to appear as a "ghost" (as stated by
GL himself and since QG never "appears" to anyone in Episodes II, III, IV, V
& VI), you would think if QG could appear as a Force Ghost that he'd have
joined Yoda, Obi-Wan & Anakin at the end of Ep.6 (yes, I know, GL didn't
know about QG back in 1983, BUT he did replace Anakin's ghost in Ep.6 for
the DVD release, so if he wanted QG as a ghost he would have stuck him in
with Hayden for the DVD).
So, Qui-Gon learned how to communicate with Yoda through The Force (as Yoda
discovers in Ep.2 - "Anakin! Anakin, no!") and Yoda learns from Qui-Gon (and
QG's copy of The Journal?) how to make those final steps to be prepared to
be One with The Force (so he could disappear instead of rot in the ground
and appear to others as a "ghost") and gives this assignment to Obi-Wan
before he sets off for Tattooine with Baby Luke (the end of Ep.3) to which
Obi-Wan learns and puts to good use in Ep.4 ("Run, Luke, Run!" - OW learned
well, he came RIGHT back!) and Yoda surrenders to The Force in his old age
in Ep.6 ("Twilight is upon me and soon night must fall. That is the way of
things, the way of The Force.").

<snip>
Qui-Gon should not appear anyway since Luke wouldn't have any clue who
that "other fool" was ... it's bad enough that Anakin was changed to
Hayden.

Who would want to be a "Jedi Ghost"? What would you do with yourself? You
have no body, so don't say what I know you're gonna say...
