Luke's age in A New Hope [message #202329] Sa, 14 Januar 2006 19:50

Recently, there has been a heated discussion about how old Luke was in
Episode IV. Mr. Lucas says that Episode I was about 33 years prior to
A New Hope. If you do the math and are familiar with the Star Wars
timeline, it would make Luke 20yrs old in Episode IV. Well, someone
else said that he was more like 18yrs old and that Episode III was 18
yrs before Episode IV. I know that it's only a two year difference,
but being die-hard Star Wars fans, this led to a lot of emotion. If
there is anyone out there who can shead some light on the topic please
do.

Heh. It's actually 19. :-)

Go to: <http://starwars.com/clonewars/explore/timeline/>
The last item (Episode3) is listed as being 19 years before the battle
of Yavin. Most people usually just round it to 20.

All of that is wrong. :-)

The established timeline from the front of almost any paperback Star
Wars novel (although not the Clone Wars ones for some reason) is:

Episode I

{10 year gap}

Episode II

{3 year gap}

Episode III

{19 year gap}

Episode IV

{3 year gap}

Episode V

{1 year gap}

Episode IV

Luke is born at the end of Episode III, so that obviously makes him
about 19 years old in Episode IV (depending on exactly when his
birthday is and when the movie takes place in the year, he might be 18
or 20).

The timeline of movie events and releative of ages of character can be found
in the AFS FAQ.

3.J - What time period do the films cover and what are the ages of the major
characters?

Using the first movie released, Episode IV, as the starting point the
chronology of the movies goes thus:

TPM -32
AOTC -22
ROTS -19
ANH 0
ESB +3
ROTJ +4

According to the novelization of TPM Anakin was 9 years old; Padmé was 14;
Obi-Wan was 25 and Qui-Gon was 60. This makes Anakin 45 at the time of his
death in ROTJ and Obi-Wan 57 at the time of his death in ANH. In ANH Luke
and Leia were 19 and Han was, according to the novelization, "perhaps five
years older than Luke, perhaps a dozen."
