Sam Raimi to direct _The Wee Free Men_ [message #200091] Mi, 11 Januar 2006 04:48

I didn't see any other notice of this here. But It looks like our
favorite little blue men are coming to a big screen near you.

---------------------------

Sam Raimi (Spider-Man 3) will direct The Wee Free Men, an adaptation
of Terry Pratchett's best-selling young-adult fantasy novel, Variety
reported. Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the book and set
Pamela Pettler to write the script.

Published in 2003, Wee Free Men centers on a 9-year-old farm girl who
heads off to a parallel world to retrieve a brother who has been
grabbed by a nasty fairy queen. She battles the monsters of Fairyland
with the help of 6-inch-tall, blue-faced rowdies who wear kilts, speak
in thick Scottish brogues, steal sheep and drink heavily.

The novel is part of the British author's Discworld series, whose
volumes are big sellers around the world.

Raimi and Josh Donen will produce through their Sony-based company,
along with Created By's Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza.

Raimi will also direct the upcoming third Spider-Man film, which gears
up production this month.

For the curious, her only current major credit is The Corpse Bride.

I'd be very inetrested to see if Pratchett himself has given this film
the Thumbs Up, considering the number of offers for a Discworld movie
he's turned down on the grounds that they won't meet his expectations.
That said, the Execs may "tweak" the story to completely remove any
reference to the Discworld whatsoever.

Yes, you laugh, but look what they did to "I, Robot" (which I refer to
by it's original script title, "Hardwired", seeing as it has next to
nothing to do with the original compilation of short stories).

Except Hollywood is all about franchises these days. Discworld has
franchise all over it. Now trusting Hollywood not to screw it up is
another thing.

According to Variety, the screenplay writer - Pamela Prettler - "read the
book and persuaded Gerardis and Vicinanza, who controlled the rights for the
author, to come aboard".

This means that Terry has sold (or sold option on) the rights to film the
book, unless Gerardis and Vicinanza are acting as his agents, and given his
comments on movies before, I'm inclined to believe he has faith in their
judgement.

Depends. They might not be allowed to alter it too much. While it's
unlikely they'd accept a contract in which the author has the final say over
the script and film, there might be clauses specifying how much they may
deviate.

Well, yes, but that's the sort of thing Terry repeatedly has turned down -
taking an existing idea and slapping a popular recognisable brand on top -
so that's unlikely.

The only reason "Hardwired" was renamed and slightly reworked was that they
got hold of the rights to "I, Robot" cheaply.

Anyway, I wonder what happened to Dreamworks production of the Bromeliad
(Truckers, Diggers, Wings). They were supposed to start working on that
after Shrek 2, but it seems to have been postponed. That's not unusual,
AIUI.

I don't really see how Sony could have got the rights *without*
his approval...

If he had already sold the rights to someone else who in turn sold them
to Sony, that could happen.

Which, for those who haven't seen it is (IMESHO) a well written (and
scored) movie let down by poor pacing, though whether that was a
weekness of the script, the direction or the animation itself is
debatable.

I say it's possible, but then even years of posting on afp hasn't squashed
the tiny flicker of optimistic naivete that cowers within me.

You are probably right in saying that there will never be a perfectly loyal
and accurate Discworld movie that will please all fans of the books. But it
doesn't have to be perfect to be worthwhile. The HHGG movie wasn't a perfect
adaptation, but I'm still glad it was made. The LOTR films weren't perfect,
but were still extremely good. And I actually think the Harry Potter movies
are better than the books (solely because they contain Alan Rickman).

If the movie versions of books were exactly the same there would be no
reason for people to read them, and the world would be sadder, duller and
even more stupid than it already is.

Brilliant!

Now that's out of the way...

I'm expecting good things of Sam Raimi. Judging by his sense of humour
in the three Evil Dead movies (Medieval Dead had touches of python about
it, but maybe thats just me.)

If the execs in Hollywood have any sense they'll leave it as intact as
possible.
