.....finally comes to DVD 16th Jan. Lynda La Plante's excellent thriller
(forget the dire Sam Neil version) is being released in its 3 hrs+
full-length version and features one of Timothy Dalton's best ever
performances.

Incidentally, his co-star is David Morrissey who, if reports are to be
believed, tested for 007 this time around. A young Penelope Cruz
also features as Dalton's bit of fluff.

Cool. Is that in the US, too? I've only seen parts on US cable. It
looked pretty entertaining, though.

This is a R2 PAL release I'm afraid. Well-worth the effort of ordering
from the UK if you happen to have a multi-region DVD player.

This is quite excellent, although it peters out toward the end. The
writers had run out of plot. It was presented on American tv as a mini
series. Are you saying we didn't see the full version?

If the version you saw was four episodes, then you saw the full version.
The US cassette and DVD is shortened. The version I saw, one writer
only, didn't peter out - it actually got better towards the end.

I'd agree. There was one moment in episode three where I thought
'Framed' might be losing its way a little, but for the most part the
last bit of the series is a fine example of how to pile double-cross
upon double-cross and still have the story make sense and have some
real forward momentum (John Gardner take note). I think the ending is
as satisfyingly ambiguous as any I've seen in recent years.

Also, based on my few years' experience working among them, I think the
older British coppers are wonderfully portrayed as well - there's a bit
at the end where they're gathered in a pub and start a ragged sing
along to the Kinks' 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion' which feels more
real to me than anything 'The Bill' has ever offered.

For anybody who's seen the series, does that bit where Timothy West's
styrofoam coffee cup springs open look like something unscripted which
just happened on set and the film-makers then decided to keep? It's a
wonderful little touch.

Best

Phil

THE BILL, as the late, great Geoff McQueen conceived it, was spot
on for the most part. McQueen must be rolling in his grave with
what has happened to it now.

Lynda La Plante can give good copper, with often the right actor
cast in the role. I can never forget (Bond alumni) David Calder's
excellent turn in WIDOWS. And, of course, Calder and FRAMED's
Trevor Cooper were in STAR COPS together.

La Plante had a meeting with the Broccoli's around the time of
GOLDENEYE, don't know if she did any work though.

God, I remember the pilot, 'Woodentop'. I really am getting older.

(I probably shouldn't be too hard on the show since in the last few
years it's namechecked my mother in her real-life job and used my kid
brother as an actor :-) )

Best line from the wonderful retro-series LIFE ON MARS:

"Vargas thinks it's the role of Phillip Glenister's extensive TV career."

Doubtless you'll be in it yourself one day. Seems to go hand-in-hand
with Rep these days; akin to TAGGART for actors north of the border...

I wouldn't be so sure. I managed inadvertently to offend one of
their casting directors a little while ago and still go red with
embarrassment when I think about it.

(I'd been forewarned that the guy was sensitive about his height -
he's a head shorter than I am - but when somebody tapped me on the
shoulder and said 'Phil, may I introduce you to...' I turned,
frowned because I couldn't see anybody there, then looked down to see
the guy was standing right in front of me. To say he was looking
daggers would be an understatement...)
