: You seem to be of the opinion their goal was solely to create fear. I am of
: the opinion that their goal was equally, if not more importantly, to kill
: people. They succeeded in killing people. I'd rather not give them a great
: big bullseye to aim for. (And we know that if we put the WTC back up,
: they'll go for it again - this wasn't, after all, the *first* time the WTC
: attacked. It was actually the ...third? I was old enough to remember the
: time before this one, but if there was one before *that* I don't remember
: it - though I believe I heard there was.)

Their overriding goal was symbolic.

If twice as many people had died, but the Towers had stood,
the survivors of Al-Qaeda would have felt they failed.
If everyone had gotten out alive, and the Towers then collapsed
into rubble, they would have cheered their success.

:> If we don't put up buildings at least as big,
:> all our military response is empty bluster.
:
: First of all; our military response is not "bluster." We have killed,
: crippled, and scoured from the earth numerous terrorist cells and their
: collaborators. This is not a /gesture/; this an /act/. The difference is
: that if we take cautions in the homeland, those cautions in no way change
: what our military response was; the destruction of terrorists. You can feel
: free to treat our military act as a means of dick-waving *in addition* to
: what it actually accomplished, but dick waving was not it's sole goal.

But a POINTLESS act UNLESS accompanied by BUILDING NEW TOWERS
AT LEAST AS TALL AS THE OLD ONES.

The present intent to dramatize how successful they were at humbling
us by surrounding pointedly empty holes with smaller buildings makes
the symbolic result of their act of mass murder a victory for them,
no matter how many of them we kill.

: Second, out of curiousity; where do you live? I find that the number of
: people that bluster the most about putting up the towers "bigger than
: before" grows proportionately the farther away from New York the people were
: when 9/11 actually happened.

I live in the Hudson Valley,an easy enough commute from Manhattan.
Since the Towers fell,I've been in the WTC area rather often as part of
my campaigning against the official travesty. When we have group meetings,
petition drives, rallies, and so forth, they are in Manhattan.

: Take a good look at the headers on my posts; take a good guess as to just
: where I was.
:
: Maybe I'd rather have safer buildings, for the people inside and the people
: around them, than buildings that proclaim "I'm not afraid of you!" and
: invite another attack. I happen to find the lives of the people inside and
: around those buildings infinitely far more important than putting up a great
: big concrete middle finger to foreigners.

And you'd better learn some wisdom from Eli Attia:

"As an architect who has devoted his life to designing
tall buildings,I can state without reservation that any
100-story building is safer than any 50-story building."

That's part of an essay where he explains the engineering necessities
that force this to be true...taller buildings have to be stronger to
even stand up.

We've often run out of our "YES I'd Work on the 110th Floor!" stickers.
As for me,I am afraid of heights...but if it made the difference on
there BEING a 110th floor,I'd LIVE on that 110th floor for the rest of
my life!

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
