Merry Tolkmas to All... [message #196860] Mi, 04 Januar 2006 02:03

(or a Pippin Tolkmas,I suppose...)

He would have been 114 (1892-2006),not "eleventy-three" as the
other thread-starter proposed.

I've gotten the 50th Anniversary paperback TLotR from HMCo to go with
the leatherbound version, and I note correction of the family-tree
typos but not the Note on the Text typo, and the new index (which is
longer than but unfortunately does not conserve all the information
in the old).

I was surprised to see Hammond and Scull identify the Index of the
Second Edition as Nancy Smith's-as-revised-by-JRRT...the impression
I got from the Foreword was that Mrs. Smith had done a COMPLETE
index, one Tolkien thought *too* complete to go with the text as it
was and rather best used in a companion volume, while the index in
the book,as it said,was a selective one.

I think it's clear now why Wayne rarely if ever directly involved
himself in the index debates. There was nothing to help resolve the
specific questions hinging on who wrote the index.

I would like to see a more definitive edition of LOTR published, rather
the editions which have made the compromises explained in the READER'S
COMPANION.

And the initial run of the 50th Anniversary Edition went out with
a flawed index.

Perhaps for the 60th Anniversary...what does Christopher Tolkien
think?

I don't know if he has ever made a public statement with respect to the
matter. I infer from Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull's comments in
their book that they are more-or-less in charge of the process,
undoubtedly exercising considerable respect for various established
precedents and whatever knowledge they have of the Tolkien Estate's
wishes.
