It was announced back on December 16, 2005 that ROTS is among the
seven movies that are currently under consideration by the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a possible award for achievement
in visual effects. Do you think Episode III will make to the final
three nominees and possibly win the award ?
Personally, I think CGI effects look good when they are blended with
either real-world scenarios or animations that look convincingly like
real-world scenarios. CGI in exotic alien environments like in SW look
however too cartoonish for my personal taste (maybe because of
limitations of existing technology). I am therefore skeptic about ROTS
chances, not least because it will be up against
heavy-weights like Peter Jackson's "King Kong" and Spielberg's "War of
the Worlds" (suprisingly the
front-runner according to Hollywood insiders). I wouldn't bet on Narnia
either, since the visual effects in "The Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe" look really bad IMHO (despite a few decent scenes
occasionally).

You mention special effects as a bench mark, but yet dismiss ROTS? *funny*
Anyway . . . story is important too . . . and the LWW seems to have been
very consistent over the past few weeks, while KK has been a burst and a
fizz. Here are the current stats from http://www.boxofficemojo.com
By the way, LWW beat out KK last weekend in US Domestic sales.
LWW
Domestic: $224,839,000 58.9%
+ Overseas: $156,700,000 41.1%
----------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $381,539,000
******************************
KK
Domestic: $174,324,000 43.9%
+ Overseas: $222,500,000 56.1%
----------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $396,824,000

King Kong has many 'cartoon' moments and is loaded shots with obvious
blue-screen.

Then the last 1/2 hour of Sith was killer, real world scenario (lava
eruptions), and a blend of real lava footage and CGI that were very
difficult to distinguish.
