Hi and Merry Christmas;
Has anyone ever thought of [I personally couldn't find anything closely
related] making a GoogleMaps or Google Earth-based project that would
give Hitchiker's Guide-like articles on places, cities, bars, etc?...
Yes, one could say that Google Earth itself is pretty much like such a
thing - but not by style nor by content. If no such project exists, do
you think it's a good idea to start one? Would you participate?

I think Wikipedia, for all it's faults, is becoming that very thing.
I wish they have a PDA friendly version of it like there is of H2G2.

2 Bondee: And just how convenient is the user interface if you want to
find geographic-oriented data? How many articles are there? Not quite
zillions, you know :) How stylish are they? [that's what regards h2g2].
2 Gusty: again, I'm not talking about an encyclopedia. I'm talking
about a Hitchhiker's Guide. I'll never believe that you don't feel the
difference - otherwise you wouldn't participate in this group. Show me
an article about the best-bar-in-the-block-over-there in Wikipedia....
or the list of weather effects best to be avoided in London... :)

http://www.placeopedia.com/ is a project to connect Wikipedia articles
to their respective places. What you're talking about sounds like a
huuuuge project; would be really useful though

Seems like the key to making it happen is finding a way to get
large numbers of businesses to pay small amounts to have themselves
entered as an advertising expense. It would have to be cheap enough
that only a few customers would pay for it for sure.

Last evening I collected signatures at the 9/11 Truth committee
meeting in San Francisco. I've now gathered about 20 of the 150
signatures I need to get on the California Green Party ballot
as a Candidate for U. S. Senator.

Let's put it this way...I can imagine exactly what you mean, and I
would throw my Grandmother to the ravenous bugblatter beast of Tral to
have ascess to such. Sadly, I know of nothing /quite/ like what you're
saying. It would be a massively huge project....
But yes, if you started it, I would be willing to jump on board and
could probably find a few friends who be highly usefull too. I
personally am a good writer, know a lot about geography, know plenty
about computers, and know some programming language and some half-way
decently advanced CGI techniques. I'm always more than ready and
willing to learn more. I'm learning to use a 3-d modeling and animation
program (Blender) right now.
