Where does it say "Obi-Wan killed your father"??? ?:-\
Presumably you mean Obi-Wan's little speech about "Darth Vader killed
your father".
In Obi-Wan's opinion Vader DID kill Anakin Skywalker - Vader took over
and Obi-Wan believed there was no trace of Anakin Skywalker left. As
Obi-Wan says, "from a certain point of view" he was telling the truth.
Also, since Obi-Wan was watching over Luke, there's little point in
telling him that the second-nastiest being in the galaxy is really his
father.
It's called a white lie and children are told such things about their
parents all the time to try and protect them.

I heard that since they were trying to keep it a secret as long as possible,
they had Darth Vader say, "Luke, Obi-Wan killed your father" instead. His
words were going to be dubbed anyway, so it didn't matter what he said. And
it was something shocking for Luke to react to. Mark Hamill gave this info
in an interview I saw a few weeks ago.

Ahh ... THAT "Obi-Wan killed your father".
Yes, it was a way to keep the secret, but also originally Vader wasn't
Luke's father so they were probably playing on that idea as well to
help keep the secret.

No. I believe he's talking about the "secret" that was given to the cast
during filming of TESB.
Mark Hamill knew the line was going to be "I am your father" but everyone
else (except Kershner & Lucas) was given a script which had "Obi-Wan killed
your father" in it for that scene, that way no one (but those three) knew
the "truth" until it unrolled on movie screens opening day and shocked the
hell out of everyone.

By the time making ESB was realistic Vader being Luke's father had already
been desided, in fact David Prowse had stated such in an interview before
ESB.
It does seem it was done to keep it a secret but I in retrospect I like the
read line of Obi-Wan having killed his father better. Obi-Wan's spirit
would have had to explain that both stories were correct from "a certain
point of view."

I wouldn't put too much stock in what David Prowse or Peter Mayhew
reportedly or actually say ... a lot of it turns out to be faked or
rubbish.

That may be true, but in this case in a published interview shortly after
they anounced they would be doing a second Star Wars, Prowse very correctly
outlines the basic plot twists including that Vader was Lukes father.

The recording of that line could have waited until the very last
minute. :-)

That might be the article I'm thinking off. When is it from?
You'll notice it also contradicts all the stories that Alec Guiness so hate
the movie he asked to be killed off.

His later life "hate" of Star Wars isn't "stories". Alec Guiness in his
own biographyonly mentioned it only very briefly. Whether he asked to
be killed off is debateable though. :-)
Basically Alec Guiness didn't want to be remembered for his role in a
"silly science fiction movie". He instead wanted to be remembered for
his other movie and stage work.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr r.
That is my second-biggest peeve about n00bs and Star Wars.
Nobody says that in ESB. Just like Obi Wan NEVER said "May the Force be
with you" to Luke.

I can understand that. I'm not sure he ever "hated" the movie as much as he
never understood why it was big and popular. To him it was a "silly science
fiction movie" that was good for what it was, but nothing great. Guiness
enjoyed doing all sorts of parts (anybody remember him in Murder by Death?)
and I don't think minded doing Star Wars, but would have rather been
remembered for some of his classics.
I guess we could start a net rummor that the reason he hated starwars was
because he had been killed off. ;p

Gee and all this time, I thought he just hated being remembered for playing
a 60-year old Ewan McGregor, especially since McGregor actually got top
billing in two of his episodes and McGregor got to *win* his duel with
Vader.
