Although referenced a number of times, I was wondering if there are any
tellings of the events at the end of the secind age? Thanks to the CotW
project and the more detailed rereading of the LotR appendices and now the
Silmarillion, I've found myself wanting to read about Isildur and the first
defeat of Sauron.
Thanks,
GRH

IDHTBIFOM, but I think the closest you can come is "The Disaster of
the Gladden Fields" in /Unfinished Tales/.

Although certainly not canon, the fan-fiction "Isildur" is a reasonably
entertaining read. Obviously written before the author read Unfinished
Tales.

I have seen a few volumes written by Christopher tolkein on the History
of Middle Earth. One is called Sauron Defeated. I think you should
find some of these handy, I have seen them at Boarders books in
Melbourne (Aus) Hope this helps.

"Sauron Defeated" and the previous three volumes of HOME,
"The Return of the Shadow", "The Treason of Isengard" and
the 'The War of the Ring" contain the original drafts of the
"The Lord of the Rings". They outline the evolution of the
"Lord of the Rings" and have nothing to do with the Second
Age.

SAURON DEFEATED also contains 'The Drowning of Anad=FBn=EA', an early
version of 'The Downfall of N=FAmenor' (whose working title was
'Akallab=EAth').

For the record, the "History of Middle-earth" series gets its name not
because it tells the history of events _in_ Middle-earth, but because
it tells the history of Tolkien _writing_ about Middle-earth. There's
fantastic material in there, but be warned that the vast majority of
the material in the series' twelve volumes is various drafts and
versions of what would become LotR and /The Silmarillion/. It can be
fascinating, but it's really aimed only at die-hard fans or those
interested in Tolkien's writing methods.
For you and anyone else out there who might want to know more about
what's in each of the "History of Middle-earth" books, I'll take this
opportunity to point to my "Custom Tolkien Book List" website. In
addition to telling you what each book is about, if you enter some
information on what types of things you like to read the site will
recommend a good order in which to read all of the various Tolkien
books about Middle-earth (as well as which bits in each book you're
likely to enjoy, and which bits you might want to just skim through).
The list can be found at:
