My favorite part about the prequels [message #188134] Mi, 21 Dezember 2005 18:00

The only part I like about the prequels is Darth Maul. He was the coolest
villain in the entire series, hands down. Also the duels involving him were
the best choreographed fights in the films, and maul seemed to be the most
skillful of any character with the light sabre. It took a Jedi double team
supreme to take him down. And let's face it, if obi wan wasn't able to save
himself at the last second from falling to his death, Maul would have single
handedly killed Jin and Kinobi in a single battle. It was a sucker punch
that took him down.

I agree - he was the coolest villain by far, and didn't Lucas say that
his one great regret was killing him off in the first movie? He
could've single-handedly lifted the next 2 movies out of the bowels of
complete shite-dom, to something potentially half-passable.

?????????????????????????

If it weren't for the cool makeup, what the hell would you even
remember about him?? Zero. He was lame. None of the plot had anything
to do with him. Oh yeah, he had to fight the jedi's. Wow, what a great
charactor. OK, he looked cool and could use a saber. Big whoop. If
you're gonna give Maul those props, we might as well call Greivous the
best villian in cinema history...

it was his mystique and the aura he projected - he just oozed danger.
you don't need to explicitly convey these attributes in order to
effectively project them, and i think that was the beauty of what they
did with maul, i.e. less is more. he was an enigma, and the only thing
we really knew about him was that he was the first sith apprentice for
millenia and he rocked with a double-ended sabre.

Thanks to the martial artist who played him, his light saber battles were
the best of any in the series, 1 - 6. How can you complain that he didn't do
anything? The fact that he had only one line was the best part about him, it
kept him from being ruined with corny lines like the other villains. When he
flies off his scooter in the desert and starts attacking full force it was
so freaking cool. I loved his eager pacing behind the force field while Qui
Gon and Obi Wan took a relaxer. That scary bastard was ready to go. I hated
that he was replaced by Dooku, the gayest of all the villains. I can't help
but wonder how the Empire might have played out with Maul in the Vader role.
Luke would have been a quadruple amputee after five minutes with that
animal.

Even Greivous was more entertaining for me than Maul. Cool voice, some
good lines, four sabers, no makeup, no dress, no impratical dual-ended
saber. I liked Maul but don't miss him.
The 3 Sith Apprentices [message #190409 ] Sa, 24 Dezember 2005 03:42

I personally saw Dooku as clearly the most intellectual of the 3 apprentices
and therefore the most threatening. People liked Maul for the same reason
they liked Boba Fett, "The Shape" from Halloween, the Clint Eastwood
character from Leone's Spaghetti westerns etc They looked cool, had a cool
demeanor which was heightened by a lack of dialogue so they retained a sense
of mystique.

As far as i saw though Maul "appeared" to be the most devoted and
subservient of the three to the emperor and so was in essence Palpy's
Soldier. I thought Palpy had a certain condascending attitude towards Vader
(you follow me because now you have to) while Palpy seemed the most wary of
Count Dooku...their relationship seemed the most uneasy of the three as if
Palpy was more wary of Dooku (as Dooku had less reason to stick with Palpy
than the other two...vader had a certain patheticness to him while Maul was
molded from youth..as far as i understand it). I think because of his age
and independence Dooku would have turned on Palpy sooner than the other
two...perhaps his intention was to have Grevious as his apprentice in
time..not likely..but possible.

A great bad guy is one like Alan Rickman from Die Hard. Vicious, evil and
yet highly intelligent and cunning.

Between Maul, Dooku, and Grievous, I'd have to pick Dooku; but Maul did
have the best duels.

At the end of the day, none of them interested me much but that was the
result of knowing from the start that the Chancellor was the real villain
and those other guys were just there to provide some action until Lucas was
ready to "reveal" that fact.

It would have been better if Lucas had used ONE pawn villain throughout the
prequels instead of letting each one live for only half a movie but even
then, we knew that none of them appeared in the OT so we would never have
had the emotional investment in them that we did for the Chancellor.

On the contrary, Dooku was the most naive of the three - it actually didn't
enter his head until the very end that the Chancellor set up the Invisible
Hand duel in order to eliminate _him_, not just Obi-Wan. Though he knew
intellectually that betrayal is one tenet of the Sith code, and that "three
is a crowd" is another tenet, he was still taken totally off guard when the
Chanc orders Anakin to kill him. That unspoken "Betrayor!" "Idiot" exchange
between them just before Anakin beheads Dooku said it all.

Dooku was never a true Sith. Just a wannabe.

I tend to agree. Dooku never seemed to get over his Jedi training. He was
far to loyal to Sidious.

Besides he never had yellow eyes :-p

I agree with the people citing dooku as the best apprentice. Those
saying other disparaging remarks about him need to remember that he was
the strongest sith apprentice in the prequels. I hope this isn't in
question. Even Vader never fulfils his true potential.
Some of the best dialogue is chistopher lee's in the two films he
appears in. There is a certain presence about dooku and the chancellor
that lends an air of seriousness about stars wars amid all the trivial
moments with 3-cp0, r2-d2 and others.

Dooku "I sense a great deal of fear in you skywalker.... you have
anger, you have hate... but you don't use them"

Sorry, but it is a question and I don't agree. Dooku's death scene is what
makes think he never truly understood the ways of the Sith. He is surprised
when Sidious calls for him to be killed, a true Sith would have expected it.

DKM, don't be silly. Dooku does expect it, but not in fashion it was
achieved.
Are you saying dooku couldn't have killed all the apprentices before
him?

Thus my point, he wasn't expecting it at the moment, he looked suprised that
Sidious wanted him killed. A defeated Sith should have known.

Since the only apprentice we know of before him was Maul, I'm not sure of
your point.

I with you on this - despite the fact that he looked like a geriatric,
his lightsaber is still the coolest.
