Could someone explain to me why Kirk and the crew went back to 1968 in
the TOS episode Assignment: Earth? Going back in time for the hell of
it is against the Temporal Prime Driective.

They were under orders to do so. To investigate what happened to that
nucleair weapon. Historians wanted to know.

"Using the lightspeed breakaway factor, the Enterprise
has moved back through time to the 20th century.
We are now in extended orbit around Earth, using our
ship's deflector shields to remain unobserved. Our
mission - historical research."
As for the temporal prime directive, there's nothing
to indicate that there is any such thing at the
time of TOS. Indeed you could even speculate that
the temporal prime directive was invented precisely
because of what happened on missions like this.

You could also speculate that its invention is an indication of the
storylining desperation that developed as Trek went on. ;-)

Star Fleet sent them to create a spin off series that never materialized.
You see Kirk and the rest of the crew knew if there was another series which
was part of the Star Trek universe in production when Star Trek ended, they
might be able to do guest star appearances and not have to live in a camper
truck in a vacant lot. Or in Sulu's and Rand's case become prostitutes.
McCoy on the other hand is a doctor and could stay in Beverly Hills doing
plastic surgery. BTW who played the human form of Isis the cat?

Whoever she was, she looks like Terri Garr now, unless she'd dead
and looks worse. Let the past bury the past.

Nope, you're confusing Teri Garr's role as the secretary with the
non-speaking extra who played the human form of the cat.

You're the first person to jump to this incorrect conclusion. Buy
yourself a cigar. Hell, since you're buying, make it a Cuban. Yes,
Teri Garr was in the episode, but no, I did not confuse her with
the cat lady. I said that the cat lady looks like Teri Garr now.
My reasoning is that they were both around the same age. I saw
Garr on Larry King a week or two ago, and she looks terrible. The
cat lady, as attractive as she seemed in the Trek episode, would
be old enough for social security by this time, and would no
longer be sexy.

I don't know about terrible, but she looks very fat.

I didn't realize you were making such a trivial point. Uh, you do realize
this is a news group dedicated to discussing a television show that was
produced nearly 40 years ago, right? If you don't see any point in
discussing things from so far back, then what are you doing here? Maybe you
should go find a nice soap opera group, something very current.

Good put down. A bit mild for Usenet, but on topic. It should be
easy to discover the name of said cat lady. [goes off and Googles]
As I assumed, no trouble at all. Here you go, and don't say I

Cigars are so-o-o expensive. Makes me glad I never started
smoking. We're talking $40, $50, $60 for one lousy cigar! Nuts, I
tell ye.

She actually had a real part in the movie "Rosemary's Baby," playing
