| Uhuru vs Yeoman Rand [message #179898] |

I am watching the first series of the original trek again. I'm not a Trek
expert but it seemed to me that Yeoman Rand started off as if she was going
to be a major character alongside Kirk, Spock, Bones etc but as we all know
she receded into being a minor character and Uhuru became one of the main
characters.
My question is why did this happen? Why was Rand dropped and Uhuru pushed
forward?
Rand was glamorous enough to stay in the spotlight. Was it decided to make
Trek more multicultural hence Uhuru was chosen. Or was it simply that Uhuru
works on the bridge so naturally has more of a role?

The basic story was that, indeed, Rand was one of the regular second-tier
characters and the idea was a kind of unrequited relationship with Kirk.
Sadly, Grace Lee Whitney, who played Rand, had some personal problems that
affected her ability to work to such a degree that the decision was made to
axe the character. A"slimming" pill addiction amongst other things,
apparently.
Rand was a fab character- the series lost something without her. Though
whether a will-they won't-they relationship dragging on year after year
would have got rather tedious- well, that's something we'll never know now
:)
Rand returned in The Motion Picture as transporter operator and did cameos
in other TOS films (not sure how many- she's in The Search For Spock, for
instance, watching the Enterprise limp into space dock (returning from the
battle with Khan)... and she's a redhead!)

Also, she's in Star Trek IV, working at Starfleet HQ, and also pops into the
"council chamber" as one of the noddy muppets.

I'd also note that Roddenberry had been sleeping with Nichelle Nichols
(Uhura) and this may have affected screen time.

And again in the same post in Voyager's "Flashback".

In reality Uhura was indeed a very minor character. She falls somewhere
between Scotty & Sulu, and maybe even lower in the pecking order. Her
dialogue was limited to a couple of lines. Her legend grew years later.

Aunt Jemima is a legend in pancakes. Did Uhura make pancakes?
