I've often wondered if people who've read HoME read the Silmarillion, then
go and read the relevant portions of the HoME to flesh out stories incidents
that are only touched on in the Silm. I.e., reading about Beren and
Luthien, then going and reading the Lay of Beren & Luthien, etc.

Since reading HoME I hardly even pick up the Silmarillion anymore;
frankly I don't really consider it worth reading anymore (as unpopular
an opinion as that may be here).

So would you characterize your familiarity of HoME as good? How many
readings did it take?
The latter bits of Book IV, where I am now, are very gripping as the Quenta
takes shape as almost the official Silmarillion. The Index volume also
proves useful in spots as I go along.
