Something that has just occurred to me [message #178312] So, 04 Dezember 2005 23:21

I've been a fan of DNA's works for a very long time now, so I'm quite
surprized I've never thought of this before.....Perhaps it was so obvious, I
completely overlooked it.....

Anyway.....

If Ford Prefect chose that name when he forst came to Earth, as he thought
it would be 'nicely inconspicuous'....How did Zaphod know to call him Ford
when they met up again after the Heart of Gold picked him and Arthur up from
deep space.....

I'd always wondered that too. Perhaps Zaphod heard his name on the
monitor. Re the radio show, if Ford says "the extra arm suits you" why
does he imply in a later episode that Zaphod has always had the
3rd arm?

The short answer is that DNA wasn't one for consistency. Did Arthur, for
example, have a dog ("I woke up this morning and thought I'd have a nice
relaxed day, do a bit of reading, brush the dog...") or a cat ('The door
had to be forced open because of the astonishing accumulation of junk
mail on the doormat... and also a dead tabby kitten').

The long answer is in the Radio Scripts book:

Ford meeting Zaphod
Many people have asked me angrily why it is that Zaphod Beeblebrox
instantly greets Ford /as/ Ford when I had earlier stated quite clearly
that he had only changed his name to Ford Prefect when he came to Earth.
It was very simple. Just before arriving he registered his new name
officially at the Galactic Nomenclaturoid Office, where they had the
technology to unpick his old name from the fabric of space/time and
thread the new one in its place, so that to all intents and purposes his
name always had been and always would be Ford Prefect. I included a
footnote explaining this in the first Hitch-Hiker book, but it was cut
because it was so dull. [DNA]

Douglas Adams answered that one on the froup:

I think that was added as a footnote in some versions of the book as well.

Okay, so that was a bad example of inconsistency since neither the cat
nor the dog may have been Arthur's, but I think the general point is
still valid...

Personally I prefer story-internal explanations.
Suppose Ford Prefects previous name was "Ford Out-of-this-world" but he
found it unsoothingly conspicuous for earthly purposes, and changed it to
"Ford Prefect"

Arthur may have named his dead tabby kitten "the dog", or his dog
"astonishing accumulation of junk mail". Or maybe the crew at Magrathea just
got that part wrong, after all is was a work still in progress (at least in
the movie).

Given that we have just found out (or are we just about to find out: so
difficult to get the time right) that Arthur is a member of Greenpeace
and fond of dolfins and what not, I have always assumed that someone else
(unknown) assumed that he (Arthur) was the sort of softy that would look
after a stray kitten and thus popped it through his letterbox in the hope
that it would be looked after. A forlorn hope, as it turns out.

It is such a pointless point (if you get my drift) that it must have been
something that happened to DNA as well.

I have to agree; any live kitten popped through my "mailslit" would
experience death at some point during the process.

Technically, the cat was a zombie. If I ever get a cat, I'm naming it
Schroedinger.

True story....

Commercial on TV: "...studies show 70% of all Canadians have
experiences gingivitus..."

Mom: "So do 70% of Canadians have gingivitus right now, or have 70%
percent of Canadians had it at some point in their lives?"

Me: "Well, if Shroedinger's cat is any indication, one possible answer
is that all Canadians have 70% percent gingivitus."

you learning all the advanced physics you've been spouting off about
lately? Let me guess, Shroedinger's cat told you."

Me: "Yes, but he only told me half the story."

S'why I've always preferred dogs...

If ya had a dog in a box, you'd know if it was dead or not without lookin
cos it would have pissed in the corner-hence leakage would occur at a rate
of, oh I dunno....something or other...

I don't have a cat, even less one made from plastic or ceramic :-)

There really should be a NG for core OT topics, although I'm not sure how
it'd actually work.

I guess it'd have to be, but this seemed like a more appropiate place for my
comment..:)

In my afda time off-topic posts have never been unwelcome ;-)

Except for spam and insavions of course...

Did Greg? I remember him defending Stuart, but as far as I remember he
was off topic a lot of the time himself.

I thought we had agreed on colour-coding the posts?

The initial letter of the color indicating the type of post:

[B] Blue Relevant posts
[B] Brown Irrelevant posts
[B] Black Really irrelevant posts
[B] Beige Extremely irrelevant posts
[B] Burgundy Almost, but not entirely, unlike on-topic posts
[B] Bilberry Posts which miss by a mile
[B] Blanc Posts several light years off-topic

.... or something, according to the froup home page. There are even
variations:

[B] Black Repetitive crap
[B] Black On-topic posts
[B] Brown Off-topic posts
[B] Blue On-topic posts
[B] Blue Pythonesque cascades
[B] Bisque Crossposts
[B] Beige Posts about Ford Prefect (because Carole's Dad had a beige
Ford Prefect)
[B] Beige Stuff about computers
[B] Beige Redundant questions
[B] Beige Obscure references
[B] Burnt Sienna Obligatory references
and finally...
[B] Burgundy Meta-posts, such as those discussing tagging schemes

I have marked this post with [B] for Burgundy in both meanings.

Where is Carole anyway?

I find this strangely reasonable.
Any ideas on how to apply this to other areas of social interaction?
(All I can come up with just now is answering machines, but i'd probably
need the right angle for it to work)

Would it have to be a right angle?
Because if you're not too fussy I have a small selection of acute angles
and maybe an obtuse one about 103degrees possibly....

Could I have an acutely ugly angle please?

Or maybe a rough jute.
