Let me just say that Ian Mcdiarmid was great in the prequels,
particularly in Episode III. But I think he went overboard with Darth
Sidious in the latter half of RotS. At that point, he made a huge leap
from subtle underplaying to whammy overacting.
Especially in the scenes where Anakin pledges allegiance to the
Emperor. The whole bit with "...the force is strooooooong with
youuuuuu" and "...gooooooooooooood!!!!" is more than just a little
creepy.
Not "devilishly" creepy as George Lucas probably intended it... but
creepy like a perverted old man with a rubber mask and having a mental
orgasm while Anakin is kneeling in front of him. All the while,
millions of starwars fans are eating popcorn and chugging down soda
while watching this fiasco on the big screen. I have a hard time
keeping a straight face in those scenes.

He went a little overboard here and there, I'll grant you.........but
come on. We've been waiting 2 movies to see Palpatine finally go all
evil. Let him have his fun, I say! :p
Also, do remember that he got quite f'd up just prior to that
particular scene (what with that lightning and deformity and stuff) so
maybe he wasn't *totally* back to normal yet...

One of the original reviews of RotS described Palpatine as "an aging
queen looking for a new cabana boy." I thought this was pretty
accurate. He's great when he lowers his voice and exudes evil, but,
when he sounds like he's having an orgasm it does get creepy.
I also hated the moment when he screams "POWERRRRR! UNLIMITED
POWERRRRR!" while killing Mace. Something more sinister would have
worked better. I always liked the moment when he stops using Force
lightning on Luke and says, "Now, young Skywalker, you will die."
That was sublime.

I will be completely honest with ya. I saw Revenge of the Sith in the
theater on its second day, and at the point where Windu died and the shit
really started to hit the fan, I got all twisted up inside. When Anakin
walked in on those children and turned on his lightsaber, and I saw the
reaction from that kid who thought he was there to help, I got all
emotional. It was like a sick joke from Lucas... sure, the 1st two movies
were full of goofiness, but now... NOW YOU WILL EXPERIENCE THE FULL POWER OF
THE DARKSIDE!!!!!!
But seriously, I cried a little and had to fight hard to maintain my
composure because I was there with my fiancee, even though it was dark... it
was very disturbing and very depressing. Now that I've bought the movie I
can laugh at Sidious and the whole movie, but it's never as sweet as the
first time... for instance the 1st time I saw the Matrix in the theater...
that movie messed me up for weeks!! But now that I've seen what could only
be called sequels... yuck... I laugh at that movie too. They really really
trashed a good idea there.
But the point is, for all it's flaws, it did smack me in the face and make
me cry. It could have been done better, though. They all could've.

It also didn't help that only looked similar to his character in Return of
the Jedi... but I blame the make-up artists there. What the fuck. I'm sure
they could've popped in a DVD of RotJ and done an better job.

That part makes me crack a smile too but BECAUSE it's creepy. Love the
way he cups his lower lip as he says "yyyyoooouuu", a facial expression
we have not seen from the emperor before. Overacting, but good

I think they did it purposely since he was supposed to appear a bit
younger in Sith. Same with Yoda (although when you're 900 years old,
does 20 years make a difference?)

But remember, he was an evil Sith lord who had to hide it while he
dealt with politicians all day long year after year. Can't zap a
