| A strange story [message #176208] |
Di, 29 November 2005 20:33 |
|
This all happened since November 19th.
I have what I think is an exceptionally strange story to tell you. I
also have conclusions about the possible meaning of the story, but I'll
reserve them and leave you to make your own. I had played a dance in
Coffeyville, Kansas, on November 19th. It had gone well and, after the
long drive back to Tulsa, I slept well. When I awoke on Sunday Morning,
I noticed that I seemed to have picked up a virus of some sort. There
was no coughing or sore throat, and no apparent rhinitis, but my stomach
felt less than easy. I packed my gear out to Blues City and set up to
help host the jam at around 3:30 PM. We played the introductory set and
passed the Microphones to the first guest band. By that time, I was
feeling so bad, I packed it in and went home and to bed.
For the next couple of days, I felt worse and worse, until eventually I
called my Doctor and set up an emergency appointment. I told him the
circumstances and he had a blood workup done. I had become terribly
dehydrated, so drawing the blood sample was a tedious and difficult
process for the nurse. When he called in a few days, he noted that the
results were somewhat inconclusive, but disturbing, so he was going to
do further tests on the remaining blood sample (they keep the sample
refrigerated for two days for just such a purpose). When he called back
after those tests, he was a bit disturbed by the indications. He said he
wanted me to go to the hospital and take new samples and some X-Rays. He
knows I prefer to know the straight facts, with no bedside manner, so he
told me that so far all indications were that I had Multiple Myeloma, a
form of bone cancer, but he needed to see the results of one more set of
special tests to nail down the diagnosis and indicate what actions
should be taken. I looked it up on the medical database on the net and
learned that it was incurable and eventually would be fatal. A friend of
mine drove me to the hospital and helped me through radiology and the lab.
One of the symptoms of my illness was that I seemed to have regressed
radically in mental acuity; I couldn't remember how to use my cellphone
and navigating the web was a very difficult and exhausting process. In
the following days, while waiting for the results of the tests, I
gathered my mind and began making plans for my remaining time: who would
get which sports car; which guitar, who would inherit my books. When
Monday morning rolled around, I got up and waited for the verdict. Many
friends had offered prayers on my behalf, some from as far away as
England and Australia. I don't respect Gods with names, but I do respect
and accept prayers from anybody.
The call came. The Doctor was amazed and mystified. He had rechecked the
original test numbers and values and they said, as before, that I had
Myeloma. The new test results, on the other hand, said that I had no
illness of any kind, a clean slate. The original indicators were no
longer there. I had gone from a potentially terminal condition to health
in less than a week. Of all possible outcomes, this was the one I was
totally unprepared to hear. I had resigned myself to a very short
remaining time, including chemotherapy and eventual loss of function
and, suddenly, in the space of a few short sentences, had been reprieved
and set free.
I felt no exhilaration, but I had been feeling no regret or depression,
either. I did see that my life's direction was going to change because
of this priceless opportunity to reassess my priorities. I offer no
conclusions or conjecture as to whether this was a divine intervention,
a glitch in lab results or just one of those things. I'm going back for
some further tests in order to try to make some sense of the matter. I
expect each person who hears this story will come to those conclusions
that best support his or her opinions and preconceptions, since this is
the way we are. It's a strange little story, of no import on the larger
stage, but I have lived it and it has had a profound effect on my life
and attitudes.

I don't think the conclusions matter much, so long as we get to hang on

I'm afraid that as a recent member of this froup, I don't know you well,
but I felt I had to comment on your story.
I am sincerely glad that you now appear to be well, and I trust that you
remain so for a very long time.

I think your original gut instinct that it was a virus was
correct. Blood samples taken during an active viral infection can
show some pretty strange results. Unfortunately, in your case,
those results looked similar to multiple myeloma which then set
off alarm bells. At least your doctor was sensible enough to get a
second set of blood samples rather than insist upon a bone marrow
sample - which, whilst it might have confirmed a diagnosis one way
or another, is not a very pleasant procedure to have to undergo.
Glad to hear you'll be sticking around for a while yet.

Thanks my dear; looks like it may happen after all. It was a miraculous
opportunity to reasses my life direction. I went out today and spent
$400 on a new vocal mike and tube preamp. Rocky's going to sing again!

I intend to make it my profession. I can still play music as a hobby.
BTW, anybody here heard "Mad Dogs and Okies?"
Bought mine yesterday and was delighted to learn I'm on it, with Willie
twinning the vocals with Cale on one song.

Thanks friend! I think he's a very good Doctor (he's also a bluegrass
musician).

As a Puck, I suspect you are familiar with my own favorite
anthropomorphic personification of deity, Coyote, who has been known to
try to make those he plans to bless dodge or flinch first, just to see
if they can handle it, and for fun.
Thanks! (Didn't flinch!)

Sorry about that. Always have lived dangerously, but wasn't responsible

BTW, next time I roll up Queens Road I might have a very charming lady

I sure hope that's true! Cale just finished producing the next Clapton
album and it's going to be one of his best ever.
Check out the new compilation, "Mad Dogs and Okies." It's magnificent!

young.

Yes you are sometimes, and yes we do anyway. I would miss you very much,
and I was horrified when I read the words from your preliminary
diagnosis. I'm all too well aware of the prognosis in such cases, my
parents having lost a friend to the disease some years ago. I was very,
very glad to see that it was only a preliminary diagnosis, and that
things are looking a lot better now.

I'm glad the second set of results were clear - who knows what happened, but
whatever it was, it's very much a Good Thing that you are well. Long may you
continue so!

The aches are receding; I'm eating some really nice food; my mind has
been back for a few days; life (and her sister) have nicely slapped me
upside the head, providing a priceless wake-up call. All in all, I would

Not surprisingly, much better than if it had not happened. I was
convinced it was my call to the door and had accepted it. I'm sure
that's why I can still hear the sound of little steel balls falling into
chutes and dominoes cascading as my karma realigns itself, no humour
intended. I have begun to be transformed into an anticrastinator, a
whole new phase for me. You can't buy that, but you can sure take it to
the bank.
