Like the Yo-Yo that i am, I again find myself returning to AFDA.
Who Am I?
You all might know me as Aaron, or Far From Unique, or even
Oosh_Ninja...
But most likely you know me as Gaz.
Who's still here?

I'm here.
If you mean "here" to be afda.
If you mean here as in "where you are", then I'm not here, unless
you're hiding in my house.

I guess. Oh, and Jan the Swampster. Plus all those I forgot right now.

Yay! The footnote was lost though.
*looks for footnote*
I found this one:
[2.1] With spaghetti.
The number is close, but I'm not sure it is teh right one...

Kie is lurking. Amro is here. Screwtape and Freakstone at irregular
intervals. And as a curiousum(sp?) we had a posting by Howard Gardner in

Are you really new enough not to know the default footnotes, Rasmus?
The standardized ones include, but are not limited to:
[1] Not really.
[2] Yes, really.

Screwtape is just about as regular here as he is irregular on #afda -
or is it the other way round :-)

Bad choice of words rather. I think I meant "I should go do my master
thesis instead of posting right now."
I found out that "my" computer was occupied by my advisor and PhD
student playing with "my" laser equipment so I could as well have
stayed here posting :-)

I am here and you are not. Or are you here and I am not? I dunno. Who
the hell cares? Well, if you're reading this, obviously you're
here, which would mean I am not. Then again, if I am writing, then I
must be here, which would mean that you are not. Furthermore, I think.
I am thinking of this, among other things right now. And since I think,
therefore, I am. Do you think? What about? If you think, you must be
also. Could it be that we both are here and we both are and it is a
third person who is not here and therefore is not? Who is
Person-Not-Here? Why aren't they here? Are we waiting for them? Do we
have to? What are we waiting for? Is it that Person-Not-Here does not
think and therefore is not, and we are waiting for them to be "is"?
Is it that they think, but are not "is" anyways? How can that be?
Perhaps it is something else all together. Perhaps it is that we are
not. Perhaps you do not think and therefore are not. Then you would not
be here. And Person-Not-Here is not here because they are really
Person-Is-Not, because they are not "is" because they do not think.
And lastly, I am not here, because I only think I think but I do not
think, and therefore, I cannot be "is". And if I only think I
think, then I cannot be writing, because writing is thinking. So you
are not here and I am not here. And Person-Is-Not never thought or was
thought of at all, so Person-Is-Not never was anywhere. So
Person-Is-Not is not here. You are not here, and I am not here, and I
have not been writing, because the writing is not here. So no one and
nothing is here, and the no one and nothing is thinking, and therefore
it is. Yeah. That must be it.
(You don't know me. I'm new. The above was totally random.)

I know somebody that lost a relative when he drowned
in a bowl of oatmeal. Didn't think tea came in a big

Omicron Machine *might* be small enough to fit in a standard cup of
tea.
Though I am not sure it was a standard cup, it might've been some kind
of rariTea...

If my gender were a delusion, I'd hallucinate myself into a double-D.
;)
And sure machines can be male or female! It depends on how they're
hooked up. The radio gets plugged into the wall. So it's male. My
computer doesn't plug in, it gets things plugged into it. So it's
female. The toaster plugs in. Male. The TV (for the vast majority of
it) has things plugged into it. Female. And so forth.
Get it? ;)

Do you mean then that my monitor is married to my computer?
I should look for the legal papers then...

That could be said, but generally I take the entire set of hardware at
once when I say "computer", and ratio-wise, more things plug into it
than it it plugs into other things, so on balance, female. Though with
some very masculine attitudes and hobbies.

If you took the whole set of hardware at once, then surely a computer
would, by necessity, not have anything plugged into it because you'd be
counting it all as the same thing?
If you count the computer as a box then it's female but if you count it
as the whole whack, it's actually been neutered.

Last evening I collected signatures at the peace vigil

The cord that plugs into the wall makes a machine make if it is not
removable at the end connected to the device without voiding the
warrenty, like a radio. The radio is male. My XBox has a cord that
plugs into the power source at one end and the machine at the other.
The XBox can have the power cord removed without damaging the machine.
My XBox is female. My computer, now that I think of it, is like a Borg
collective. The mouse, the CPU, the monitor, the keyboard, the printer,
the speakers, etc, etc. Now, here's the thing...each component has it's
individual gender: the mouse is male, for example. Like Borg drones.
But they're all hooked up to, communicating with, and under the power
of the CPU. The CPU is female, and since they are part of her, and she
is part of them, like the Borg Queen, that makes that makes the whole
mess at least partially female.

ah-ah! not quite.. see, if you look closer than just the box, but INSIDE
the box, you realize that the motherboard is actually the only truely
female component; everything plugs into it, either directly or in. The
CPU itself is completely male, as it has only prongs. the same is true
of all of the IC's and RAM chips attached to the MBoard.
Now the complex part is the PCI/AGP/ISA/CNR cards. THey are male on one
end (the part that plugs into the computer) and female on the other (the
end that you plug something into). However, they all have their own
processor, which controls the card. And the processor is, again, always
male.
but wait... we're thinking of males as being defined as having only one
type of connector, and females as also only having one. Now, if you want
to reach very slightly into sexual deviancy, it becomes clear that the
PCI/AGP/ISA/CNR cards are actually BISEXUAL male devices, Mice,
Keyboards, and other input devices are STRAIGHT male devices, and the
motherboard is the only truly female device in the system.
Wow. Bisexual computers. Who'da thunk it?

It's nice how the only truly female device has a female name...
I still remember that editorial by Kevin McKeowan, who at the
time was (and probably still is) a Santa Monica City Councilman.
He said "Computer engineers must be Green because circuit boards
are all green", or words that went something like that...
