My son and I were discussing the scene where The Emperor kills Mace and we
came to the conclusion that possibly the Emperor was not "deformed" by Mace
deflecting the Force Lightning but that was the Emperor's true look and it
came out then. Maybe his "normal" look was really his disguise to hide his
true hideous look.
Thoughts?

If that was the case, I see no rationale for why he would then leave it
that way. Unless you are saying he had some 'ability' to hide his true
face, and Mace zapped that ability permanently - rather than physically
deforming him.
Then again.... hmmmm....your idea makes sense if the emperor decided
that this would be a good time to reveal the deformed face since it is
evidence that the Jedi tried to kill him, make the Senate stick up for
him more because they can see his maimed face, etc.
Yup this is a valid point you have here.

Just finished SW: Dark Lord by James Luceno and in it he basically states
that Palpatine
was injured/disfigured during the battle with Mace.

If that was the case...
- Why would a chamelon rely on a hood for disguise in Ep1 & 2 if he could
just change his face to keep the Separatists from knowing his true identity?
- If the Palpatine face was a crafted disguise, why would he make himself
look like Palpatine? I mean, he's not the most photogenic politician I've
ever seen...
- Anakin also shows off the jaundiced eyes when he gets into the Sith act.
Was he also hiding a true look (as a nine-year old kid back in Mos Espa?)
I think a simpler explanation is...
Lucas made the ROTJ Emperor into that monstrosity because It Looked Cool and
the backstory of him once being the head of a democracy wasn't needed for
that movie.
Now that the prequels were actually being made and Palpatine needed to look
like a normal guy, Lucas needed some way to explain how he turned into Mr.
Cleavage Head. So the face frying was invented after the fact as a
not-quite-plausible-but-good-enough-for-a-summer-movie rationale. Plus the
new tid-bit that using the Dark Side of the Force apparently also turns your
eyes yellow.

Doesn't seem to me that he is overtly wearing the hood for disguise,
when he is the Emperor he is always around his cronies anyway, isn't
he? Just seems like something for him to wear to make him look more
menacing and secretive (and to assist in making him look different than
Palpatine to us, of course, especially before his face gets
pop-n-freshed)

Most of his Separatist cronies don't know Sidious's true identity. General
Grievous doesn't. Viceroy Gunray sure doesn't (like Palps would ever trust
that worm with such a devastating secret.) Count Dooku was really the only
one among the Seps who was in on Sidious's day job. (Oh and apparently five
hundred thousand or so clones.)

I've always thought that Palpatine was a non-human in disguise. The
imperial dignitaries in the background of some shots of RotJ look an
awful lot like the emperor.
<http://www.ffurg.com/casting_call/dignitary.htm>
I think perhaps Lucas lost along the way by because the official Star
Wars website defined his species to human a while ago.

You guys say deformed, but how about really old? How did his teeth get
rotted? His eyes? All of that is the looked of a really old man, about
1,000 years old. After the Jedi found him out, there is no need to keep
hiding.

If you run enough voltage and amps thru somebody, I doubt they are
still going to have a Christie Brinkley smile. The eyes? Anakins sort
of turned yellowish too and he wasn't old, maybe that is just some kind
of side-effect of revealing your 'evil self'.

I always liked the Dark Empire "he's a clone and he looks old because
the dark side powers deteriorate his body quickly" explanation.
Considering that Lucas has always been a big fan of DE, I was kinda
disappointed (but certainly not surprised) that he didn't go that route
in Episode 3.
BTW, the cloning thing still fits in the SW world, I think, since they
could just say "well, the Emperor got into the cloning thing between
ROTS and ROTJ."

From the ROTS novelization (take it for what you will):
"And so the mask becomes the man," he sighed with a hint of philosophical
melancholy. "I shall miss the face of Palpatine, I think; but for our
purpose, the face of Sidious will serve. Yes, it will serve."

There is certainly evidence to support the idea that Sidious was always
deformed and the Palpatine face was merely a mask. Rick McCallum certainly
believes that to be the case. I don't think it's true though because
whenever we see Darth Sidious throughout the prequels, mostly in holographic
form, his face is never deformed until after it changes in ROTS. In his
meeting with General Grievous we see a nice close up shot of Sidious and his
face is clearly Palpatine's, without the wrinkly bits. If the wizened face
is his ture appaearance why would he continue wearing the Palpatine face
whilist in his Sidious guise?

Darth Maul and Anakin had different Sith eyes(Dookou did not...), but the
Emperor had very light yellow, almost clear eyes. He has the look of a man
who should be dead, but is alive.

Because there was no need to reveal himself at that time. As he still had
not. I did think about that too though. I guess this is another mystery
that Lucas wants us to ponder about. However, Palpatine is basically
telling us that he is very, very old throughout the film.

Yes, but the same book just a few paragraphs before talk about how he is

Rick, like many others, has made conflicting statements. Right now it seems
to officially be that Palpatine was deformed by the force lightning being
deflected back him. Star Wars Insider likened the idea that the deformed
face as being the "true" face of Sidious to Batman being the "true" face of
Bruce Wayne in the comics.
That being said ,I think Lucas changed his mind on what caused the
deformity, because in AOTC Palpatine's face already looks like it is
starting to decay.

The clones probably only needed to receive a message on a certain

It could be that it was a semi-permanent mask. It was difficult to
apply and not worth removing for a brief message. Think Face/Off with
the John Travolta/Nick Cage face exchange.

Well it could have been decaying all along and the force lightening
