I have a question for you Star Wars experts.
From what I understand only the Sith and the Jedi have lightsabers.
The Sith had been absent for many years and even when they were around there
were only two at one time.
Other than the Jedi/Sith battles in these movies, when would a Jedi ever
have had a chance to have a lightsaber duel with anyone?
Were there other bad guys with lightsabers? General Grievous was trained by
a Sith to use one.
Maybe that is why Palpatine defeated all of those Jedi so easily; they had
no previous dueling experience.

Dueling =/ Killing or maiming
So there are friendly duels.
Windu was beaten by Yoda in a duel, but he was still up and around.

>>From what I understand only the Sith and the Jedi have lightsabers.
Not really true. Actually only the Sith and the Jedi *can make* a
lightsabre.
But anyone can pick up one. You can’t buy a lightsabre from a shop but you
could kill a Jedi and then pick up his/her lightsabre.
>>when would a Jedi ever have had a chance to have a lightsaber duel with

Two Jedi can do a lightsabre training with each other to ensure their skills
are still sharp in case they come across a Sith. I can’t see the harm in two
Jedi having a lightsabre duel with each other as long as they don’t hurt
each other.
Beside. In today and in the past. The military (British Army, US Army, any
military forces) do often train by fighting against each other ever if there
is no war and therefore no enemy to fight against. In the past, Knights
would have done that with wooden swords or use their real swords as long as
they don’t hurt each other. So it would seem logic that the Jedi would do
the same.
>>Maybe that is why Palpatine defeated all of those Jedi so easily; they had

No. The Jedi were wiped out because they were not expecting the Clone
Troopers to turn against them under Palpatine’s orders and also they were
outnumbered.

Well in Episode 1, after facing Maul on Tatooine and reporting in to the
council, Qui Gon gets asked if he's sure it was a Sith. A force user, a
lightsaber, and he has to be double sure it's Sith? Sounds to me like an
opening for there to be other force users with sabers in the movie canon.

But by that logic, the Sith had no previous dueling experience either,
unless there were practice sessions as previous posters noted. Plus
jedis constantly used their sabers to reflect laser fire which takes a
lot of skill.

From what I uderstand, the Sith were numerous at one time, but they
kept killing each other to gain supremacy. One of the Dark Lords
came up with the idea of "One Master, One Apprentice" to keep them
from all killing themselves. At that point, the remaining Jedi
switched from mainly blade on blade fighting styles, and focused more
on blaster deflection styles. Not that they didn't practise anything
else, but the focus was different. There are something like 7
lightsaber fighting styles, with Jin's (or was it Windu's) being an
eighth. Count Dooku focused on a dueling fighting style, which is
why his lightsaber is shaped differently. Force sensitive people
keep popping up, and some fall to the Dark side, even if they aren't
trained by the Jedi. They have access to Holocrons which explain a
lot of what's needed to become a Jedi or a Sith. I get the
impression that a force sensitive person who has some training is
considered a Sith, sort of like in TX and CA, a lot of people
consider any Hispanic person to be Mexican, whether they are or not.
In the times of the movies, having a lightsaber and knowing how to use
it might mean they were a Sith, but they could be relativly self
trained, and not have a master. Anyway, those are my impressions.

I don't think one of them came up with the idea. I think it was just a
natural outcome of their lust for power.

Lightsabers can be used against more than just other lightsabers. You
can use them against a foes with blasters they can cut through
anything . As for dueling experience the Jedi practice duelining with
each othe to keep in top shape. The Sith defeated the Jedi through
manipulation of major events in the galaxy such as the invasion of
Naboo, the Clone Wars and the clones turning on the Jedi not to mention
the most powerful Jedi, Anakin, joining the Sith.

Except another lightsaber of course : ) Would have been cool for
some enemy to have a 'super' lightsaber, swings it at one of the good
guys' sabers and slices it in half and him standing their looking at
his stump saying "Uh-ohhhhhhh" : )
