Better characters- Stargate.
Better tv episodes- Stargate
Better set and effects- Stargate
Better movies- Star Trek
Never thought I'd see the day but Star Trek is no longer the top dog when it
comes to Sci-Fi.
Winner by a knockout, Stargate.

And Stargate never relies on technobabble made up solutions to problems
like Star Trek.
There's no "reverse the polarity" to save the day in Stargate because
people can sometimes die on this show unlike Trek

Hmm, 9 movies, 4 series spanning a life of 24 years on television
collectively, a plethora of books and a few audio and stage spin-offs? With
all respect, I'll leave Stargate to their fans. I'll take Star Trek any day.
Besides, I believe that the real top dogs in the Science Fiction medium at
this moment are Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars, not to mention that The
Matrix kicked down many doors of obstacles in it's own right. All in my most
humble opinion.

Stargate is aok and much better than the film that spawned it. It is
a smart and well done show, and the best SF on tv today, though I
enjoy BSG2005 a lot, too.
That being said, when it comes to first class SF on tv, I have to give
the nod to our last best hope for peace, the story of the last of the
Babylon stations.
The year is 2258, and the name of the place is Babylon 5! ;-)

So in ALL of Star Trek Stargate has better characters?
Yeah. That's why Daniel Jackson is such a pop culture icon!! Forget Spock,
Kirk, and Data!

'The City on the Edge of Forever' and 'The Inner Light' suck!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
All Voyager and Enterprise had going for them is their FX (well, at least
until Paramount cut the current show's budget last year)
Plus, the sets for the Enterprise is one of the best sets on TV.

I hope you're talking about Enterprise, and not Star Trek as a whole,
because otherwise you'd be dead wrong.

Well, agree with ya on Star Trek not being the top sci fi dog, but it's been
that way since Babylon 5, which I always believed was pretty much DS9 done
the way it SHOULD have been done.

Comparing apples and oranges. ST:TOS was the best, then Stargate:
SG1.
ST:NG ST:DS9 and ST:E all sucked as did all the movies except ST
2:TWOK
and ST4.
When it came to the movies ST was never really top dog......that would
be Star Wars.
The worst ST movies? Anything directed by Shatner. ("Why does God
need
a Star ship?")

Let me put it this way. I first watched Star Trek back in the 60s
when the
first episode of ST:TOS premiered. Coming on 40 years later I have to
say
BB and RB took a vibrant series created by Roddenberry and drove it
right
into the ground.
I loved ST:TOS, ST:E ST:TNG and ST:DS9 were less than stellar, and most
of the movies sucked. Only exception ST2 and ST4. Want to know
what ST:DS9 should have been? It was called Babylon 5.
I love Stargate SG1, once Roddenberry died no Star Trek endeavor ever
really approached Stargate SG1 in quality.
After seeing every incarnation of Trek, from ST:TOS to ST:E, read all
the books, gone to many a convention, etc. I have to say RB and BB have
successfully caused Star Trek to crash and burn. They succeeded in
doing
what Paramount tried to do with ST:TMP.

Go back and watch Trek again. Pay particular attention to the
expendable crew members that beam down to the planet.
Also I suppose you missed the part where Spock dies in ST:TWOK?
Or when Kirk dies later in the movie series?

I loved Star Trek until Roddenberry died.
Then BB and RB trashed it.

What's worse is that even when they do "die" on Star Trek they find a way to
come back to life because the fans can't handle it. Pathetic.

Pop culture? You think Star Trek is pop culture? LMFAO. Big difference
between pop culture and a cult audience of freaks. Star Trek has nothing to
do with pop culture whatsoever. It's the antithesis of pop culture. You need
a reality check and quick.

Check the box office, dude. That's the first thing anyone in Hollywood
would check. By that standard at least Star Wars owns EVERYONE.
BSG is making the most noise in TV land right now, and a SW TV series
has been rumored. If one comes off, I guarantee it will make a heck of
a lot more noise in the press and the public consciousness than SG1 or
Atlantis is doing, whatever happens. No dis on Stargate, but SW is the
"gold standard" (literally) for producers and financiers right now.

Tell you what. Watch a week or so of the Tonight show, the Letterman
show, and Staurday Night Live. See what gets more references: Star Trek
or Stargate. It's going to be Star Trek, easily. Leno does them all the
time.
That will answer your question of which is "out there" more. Heck, in
2000, Leno did a "Klingon Rite of Succession" skit after the end of the
election contest in Florida. How many times will you see "Stargate,"
the movie or either show, mentioned when a cast member is not a guest
on a talk show? ST references happen all the time.
That's the definition of pop culture references. You are comparing a
couple syndicated shows and one movie to the cultural impact of ST's
shows and films over almost forty years. That's not going to work out
for you.

Great, the troll's moved on to fanboyism. I was getting tired of
political debate. Unfortunately I don't know anything about Stargate
beyond the crappy movie, so I probably won't be able to add to this.

Of course there probably would never have been a StarGate series if ST
hadn't opened the door.
Besides, a lot of redshirts and so forth never came back. In Spock's
case, they made huge $$$$ from it and the character proved a deep
resource for writers down the road. (Especially in ST IV and ST VI)

Hi. This almost sounds like a Xena episode where Xena and Gabrielle won't
stay dead. I lived that show too.

Ten movies and five series. I know you'd like to forget about God

them.

Those aren't even close to being sci-fi, and neither are Stargate or
Star Trek. I think the closest TV and film have come to the genre is
2001: A Space Odyssey, barring some obscure show I don't know about.
At any rate, Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars are certainly the
biggest things in the misnamed "sci-fi" genre right now, but that's
only because there's a new series and a new movie out for them
respectively.

It was actually DS9 that duped Babylon 5, not the other way around.
JMS approached Paramount with the idea for his show and Paramount
decided to run with it in their own way.
I personally don't much like either one of them, but it's been a very
long time since I've watched a whole episode of either of them as
well.

The Star Wars movies all suck, especially the new ones. Well, except

He used "people" in the sense that expendable crew-members and other
one-shot characters aren't people.

And then he came back to life in Star Trek 3.
>Or when Kirk dies later in the movie series?
Only because he'd outlived his usefulness. If they really wanted to
let characters die, then they wouldn't have brought Kirk back for that
movie in the first place. You'd have more of a point if they decided
to kill off Spock for real in one of the newer movies.
BTW, I think they're actually going to leave Data dead since the actor
thinks he's too old for the part now. If they do, it would certainly
be a first.

The original series definitely is. Everybody knows who Kirk and Spock
are even if they've never seen the show or movies once. Of course,
that has nothing to do with which characters are better.

When Stargate gets a Saturday Night Live skit devoted to it, then it can
claim pop culture status. If you say a tag line from your show, like "beam
me up Scotty there is no intelligent life down here" and every one in the
united states knows what you mean, then you qualify as a pop culture icon.
For all Stargates success, it has not achieved that kind of pop culture
identification.
But that does not mean Star Trek was the better show.
