I have had quite a lot of success with Red Hat 9, though it isn't
exactly the simplest operating system to use, it does install rather
nicely and has a lot of features to it. The only thing I don't know
about is whether it can take the place of a Windows server with NT
auntentification and 2000 workstations... but, gathering on what little
I do know about it, there's a rather large chance of it... anyone else
know a little more about Red Hat than I do?

I used Fedora Core 3 for a while, but it didn't work well for me. The first
thing I had to do with it was compile binutils and GCC, because it wouldn't
compile the latest kernel. Then running that kernel, I had to recompile
binutils and GCC again. Then I had to get ndiswrapper and the Windows
drivers for my wireless card. Finally I could connect to the Internet. I
had to download Java, then I could use LimeWire. Wait... no mp3 support.
Download and compile some more. Wait... sound card not playing. Tweak over
50 volume settings, one works. It worked and was a decent system in the
end, and perhaps RH Enterprise Linux would be better. Overall, not worth it
for anyone new to Linux. Oh, and Samba support in FC3,FC4 was lacking. I
eventually downloaded the latest Samba source and it worked perfectly.

Well, I've managed to get the OS running and can poke around KDE
pretty good. mamanged to roughly understand the configurations.
Installed some software, installed smaba and configured it for a vevy
rudimentary SMB workgroup. I can't get SWAT to work...
....from what i can tell by digging around the internet is that: while
Linux is a good stable OS platform to run in a domain to run suck
things as Apache, SQL, and various other tings, even as a domain
server, but as an actual PDC people still use M$. Unfortunaly is is
just to easy to configure and there is a wealt of knowledge freely
available to diagnose problems. (I fixed my server problem BTW, I had
a roaming user profile that was causing the Hive purge to crash, I
know it got corrupt when my UPS went FOOM after I locked up a rather
large powerdrill, the lights in the house went dim and the UPS went
POP)
Considering its still only in build 2.6 or so, it shows potentual but
I think I will stick with what I know and what I encounter on a
day-to-day bases. Windows did not become usefull intill it's fourth
version, and the windows 2000 kernal is a really good OS.
If I can get SWAT to work, I will still play with the thing but I
don't see myself replacing my windows2000 server any time soon. My
real problem with Microsoft is all the money I have spend on
purchasing upgrades that should have been free...and $200 to $250 for
an OS is too much!

The Linux kernel (http://www.kernel.org) isn't the main component in
Linux. It is a monolithic kernel, most newer OSes use microkernels,
however monolithic kernels are being shown to have slight advantages.
That's not a major issue, though. The problem with Linux (most distros)
is that it takes a good deal of technical knowledge to use effectively.
For-pay distros, OTOH, are often easy to use. However, most keep
binaries-only of the software. You have to get the source code if you
want to upgrade to a newer version that the distro makers haven't
acknowledged. That's why I switched to Gentoo. It worked with Samba right
away, with nmbd. FC3&4 worked, but wouldn't resolve names. With my house
being wireless and router using DHCP, I had to remember which one was
switched on first so I could enter the local IP address. Gentoo was
difficult for me to get configured initially, because I had to get LVM
and s/w RAID working. Once it was booted, I just installed the network
drivers and did 'emerge sync' and 'emerge kde', and left it. Signal was
lost a few times, and I had to turn the antenna, but other than that, no
user intervention.

I think swat takes xinetd, which I had trouble with initially.
I don't know much about Windows servers. Microsoft is usually very
careful in giving CDs. All I have received packaged with HP computers are
'rescue discs'. I actually switched to Linux on my desktop because I
didn't have a disc to reinstall Windows. The rescue disk just stated that
the computer wasn't a laptop, and refused to do anything else. So I
installed Linux because it beat the latest iteration of DOS. I actually
installed DOS, but it couldn't access the network. I tried several
distros before choosing Gentoo. A word of advice for choosing a Linux
system, pick one that's compiler-centrice like Gentoo is. You want to be
able to compile anything available in source! Trust me, the optimization
can make a visible difference.
