Is it just me or did R2D2 suddenly got a case of old age arthritis?

From episode III where R2 leaps out of Anakin's star fighter to episode IV
where R2 needs a crane to hoist him in his wheelchair.

Maybe R2 should grow grey hair to show his age.

It seems that Obi-Wan, Darth Vader and now R2D2 are all showing their age
(and inexperience because along with old age comes memory loss).

Oh wait, George Lucas is the one who aged and lost his mind!

Now the saga makes sense. :服

Who said R2 leaped out (ie. with his own power)? Maybe the ship had an
ejection function?

Did you forget?

R2 defeated two destroyer droids, yet when he met up with Luke in his old
age, he couldn't do anything but hide in a corner when the Tuskin Raiders
came out.

It's probably the usual old 'Law of Robotics' about not being allowed
to harm living things, but other robots are fine.

Ther IS a 20 year gap between Episode III and Episode IV. I wonder how
sparkling fresh your toaster or car is in 20 years time.

It's also likely that the starfighter has some sort of ejector system
built in so that a droid can escape in an emergency. If you watch
Episode I you'll see that the droids are hoisted into the Naboo
Starfighters (from underneath this time) in the similar careful way to
Episode IV.

Actually R2 was in remarkably good shape with all he'd been through what,
with the Rebellion and all....

And be Luke asks, yes, we know about the Rebellion against the Empire; and
the droids had been in several battles, but not "connected with the battle
machinery" unless you call losing your head in a droid factory, and finding
it attached to a battle droid being "in direct contact with the battle
machinery".

Actually, it could be said that so many droids were damaged by the ejector
that in time ejectors were abolished.

How many machines do you know that have been in use for over 30 years
? Quite frankly, I find it surprising that R2 has not been
"decommissioned" yet by the time of ANH.

If the Republic had continued normally, then R2 may well have been
"decommissioned", but under the Empire's rule there hasn't been much in
the way of technological advancement (unless it was for the Empire's
own military use), so a lot of the old equipment has continued to be be
patched and repaired.

R2D2 probably had a few refurbishment's over the years. Changes of
jobs and thus changes of on board equipment (ie, no need for jet
packs when in a household with kids around). Note that R2 and C3PO
were nicely cleaned up and shiny at the very end of ANH. They must have
had a well stocked stockroom full of gears and circuits to fix the
damaged R2 (he took a hit during the battle at Yavin). Droids
probably saw a lot of overhauls over the years, as they'd be
quite valuable.
