Star Wars is a finished series.
You wouldn't know that by a visit to StarWars.com because they want you to
pay more than the cost of the movie to join something they invented called,
"Hyperspace".
I mean, it is finished. Why would anyone wish to waste good money on that?
What in the world could they possibly offer at this point?
Goodbye.

Plus continuing books, comics, games, toys, collectibles, fan movies,
etc., etc., etc.
The movie Saga is over, but Star Wars is far from over. :-)
Although, having said that, I've never joined Hypersapce and never will.

I'm with you, fish . . . I quit Hyperspace after ROTS . . . the losers keep
pestering me to re-subscribe. It's just too expensive for NO CONTENT. Now
.. . . for $9.95 a year, I'd sign up for "exclusive" content . . . but NOT
$39.95!

What did they offer in the first place that hasn't been available a few
hours, days, or weeks later through other sources?

I've currently got a three month free subscription (as part of the Early
Bird action figure package). It's not bad. There are some interesting
things, like all of the original Bantha Tracks newsletters from the 70s and
80s. I have a feeling that the price will soon come down quite a bit simply
because of the end of the Saga.

OK,
I came in here to witness 1st hand the fanfare surrounding the release of
the the final SW movie. It was well worth the trip. :)
That said... it's starting to get old, and with the movies only getting
*older* now that the DVD is out, the repetition is bound to get worse.
The thought I'll leave you with is "It ain't that kinda movie kid." This is
the line that Harrison Ford oft had to repeat to young Mark Hamil when the
young feller questioned things that seemed "strange" during the shooting of
ANH.
Ford is right. With SW , GL had a bigger story on paper and had to pare it
down to what he thought would make the best single movie out of what he had.
He did that.... and the overwhelming success of the film caught everyone by
surprise - even Lucas. At the time of ANH being shot, Vader was not the
central character, was not Lukes father, Carie was not his sister etc etc.
The thing was made in the genre of the 1930's Saturday afternoon matinee
serials. This has the main characters getting repeatedly in and out of
trouble and adventure - and often throws plotlines and realism to the wind
to keep it all moving and keep the kids interested.
With the huge unexpected success of ANH, Lucas knew he could fully flesh out
the rest of the story he had on paper. And he did just that.... and came up
with 2 more great chapters in the serial. But something happened along the
way. Because of the huge success of the seies, the public began to take
them more seriously, scrutinize them more etc etc. And to some degree I
think GL began to take them a bit more seriously too, but not to a great
extreme. We were left with a great trilogy overall - for what it was meant
to be - an omage to the Saturday afternoon matinee seials. Only this set had
special effects like the world had never seen. IMHO - the biggest gift of
the OT to the world was that it solidified ILM as the premier effects house
on the planet. And over the years, we've gotten a lot of cool stuff outta
ILM.
So......... 15 years pass as GL waits out his divorce settlement while
working on non-SW projects. When the time finally comes to re-visit his
flagship (and cash-cow) franchise. He needs an Ep I-III to backfill the
story. All he really has on paper are vague bits about the Clone Wars, The
Evil Emperor overthrowing the Republic, and Anakin skywalker taking a
beating on Mustafar - prolly at the hands of Obi-Wan.
What we see in Ep I-III is *still* in the genre of the Saturday afternoon
matinee serial, there's still a lot of action as the main characters get in
and out of trouble over and over. But things have changed. GL is much older,
the original audience is much older, the OT has gotten "way too important"
for what they were meant to be. And ILM has grown up into a place where
*anything* can be made to happen if you can pay for the computer time. :)
So we get an "ILM showcased" NT that tries it damdest to tie up neatly with
the OT.
Yes, it's bumpy in a couple places and I bet if GL knew well in advance he'd
*have* all the resources to make I-VI in that order he'd have done his
little serial a little differently, and in that order. But he had what he
had already done, built up a back story from there, started almost from
scratch, started with a little kid as the main (remember the target audience
of the Saturday afternoon matinee serial?) and built his way back to the
beginning of Ep IV one piece at a time. (Only this time with a fully grown
up ILM to make his slightest vision a reality.) Overall I'm very happy with
the effort, and the public voted with it's wallet. :)
So............. we can whine ad-nausium about the alleged "plot-holes" which
are more like plot-twists and at worst "speed bumps" as he tried to mesh the
NT to the OT after the fact. And I suppose one can postulate forever why
silly things like Ewoks and Gungans "have no place in a Saturday matinee
serial." <yawn> Etc Etc.
Take them for what they were... they never meant to be "important films",
it's just an accident they became just that.
So in parting I'll say it one last time, because there's noting left to say
here.
"IT AIN'T THAT KINDA MOVIE KID!!!" (tm Harrison Ford)

You can go about your business, move along.

Star Trek died after "First Contact". That was the last good trek movie.
Everything, including television series have not impressed me enough to
continue.
Having said that, Star Wars was good because it was restricted to movies
only, not television series.

There have been Star Wars TV shows, but they have all been animated
(Droids, Ewoks, and Clone Wars) ... so far! There is a live-action Star
Wars TV show in the works. :-)
Plus there was the {shudder} Holiday Unspecial. :-(

Agree, and all the tv shows looked and felt and sounded the same after
STTNG.
