Ok, all this bashing about the movie, go for it. I enjoyed it for what
it was, different. The books were different from the TV series which
was different from the Radio plays which were different from the North
American novels which were different from the comic books etc...
It goes on and on and on
I didn't think Zaphod was quite Froody enough, but nothing can be done
about that now...
However, I'm absolutely in love with Zooey as Trillian. Damn she's
cute, has the greatest facial expressions and is just....wow.
I now have a new favorite actress....

She is the best Trillian, agreed.
The others get the position of second best Zaphod, Third best Ford,
Second best Marvin, Best head-on-legs-person, best Vogons, Best
Heart of Gold, Best Slartibartfast, Second best Deep Thought Voice,
Best Deep Thought Shape, Third and Fourth Best Mice, Most coherant
plotline, Fourth most funny, and a special award for the most
gratuitous use of a narration device as a macguffin in contempary
film.
So, in all, Seven stars out of X, where X is the number of stars
you started with.

Much better Heart of Gold than the TV series, especially the mural recording
the discovery of the infinite improbability drive with Douglas in it. I
like the movie's Marvin costume better, but I would rather have had the
classic voice coming out of it, not that I didn't like Rickman's portrail,
just not quite Marvinish enough.

I liked that when I saw the pictures of it. However, I never saw it
clear enough in the movie. However, the end scene when they have DNA's

But it isn't meant to be a transmogrifying machine. Heart of Gold was
supposed to be a to-die-for gleeming white spaceship - not a big ball.

'Here I am, brain the size of a planet', didn't mean they had to give him an
enormous round head did it ? I don't think there has been a good Marvin
though the Illustrated book had an interesting version. I was very
disappointed by the TV Marvin but sorta grown fond of it, so it was nice to
see the cameo even though it was not at all subtle in any way what so ever.

I've always thought that a sphere is the most logical shape for a
spaceship. Anything else is a waste of material and only increases
distances between points. Unfortunately, most film and TV SF couldn't
get out their heads designing spaceship like aircraft, which is
pointless - just look at the way spaceships swoop in Star Trek, instead
of turning on their axis. Babylon 5 did better, but a sphere is still
best, with all the most critical parts in the very middle, protected
equally from all sides. In fact, perfect for the Heart Of Gold.
However, the point above - "crap uninteresting shape" - shows why
designers design things to look good, not function well.

First book, chapter 4:
===
Beneath it lay uncovered a huge starship, one hundred and fifty
metres long, shaped like a sleek running shoe, perfectly white
and mindboggingly beautiful. At the heart of it, unseen, lay a
small gold box which carried within it the most brain-wretching
device ever conceived, a device which made this starship unique
in the history of the galaxy, a device after which the ship had
been named - The Heart of Gold.
"Wow", said Zaphod Beeblebrox to the Heart of Gold. There wasn't
much else he could say.

It isn't a good shape for friction. If you're going to fly from A to B some
streamlining makes for a big improvement.
Heart of Gold does however fly through every conceivable (what about the
others) point in the Galaxy at once so a sphere may work for that. But it
only does that at certain times and so it would need some more conventional
shape to get it around.

That was down to being suspended on piano wire. They could slide it down the
piano wire and it went in straight lines pretty well. Having things move
around is quite difficult which is one of the reasons why they though 2001
was so good. (Spacewalk scene).

They had a sphere theme. The ship was round, like Marvin's big head (who
comes down on a round lift through a round hole) and the shape on the doors
etc etc. I reckon it came from the Round thing on the HHGG game cover which
was used in 'The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide'.

The one where Kubrick asked the BBC how they did the zero-gravity
suspension in "Doctor Who: The Dalek's Master Plan". Also achieved by
shooting from below an actor suspended from the "ceiling" which appears
as a "wall" - used for an airlock sequence?

That sounds like it. I remember watching a program about the making of the
film heralding the scene as a major leap in sci-fi realism - or something
such. Shame about the rest of it, I thought !
