Made my own SW boxset [message #162351] Mo, 07 November 2005 10:01

I picked up the bonus dvd last week at Walmart with Ep3 and noticed two
things. The first was that the spine lettering was out of alignment
with the other dvds; the second was that the cover art represented both
trilogies and looked great.

After some thinking, I made color copies on adhesive paper of the bonus
dvd label and Phantom Menace. Was able to cut up the spine portions
and rearrange into new spines for the bonus dvd and for the Ep3
soundtrack (with bonus music dvd) in a double dvd case.

Bought a black wooden dvd case at Fry's Electronics, a little table saw
surgery and paint, added the adhesive color printouts and presto a nine
dvd boxset:

Hey, your set looks pretty good! I like the idea.

One thing that I've been wondering since the OT came out last year is why
do the prequels all have gold lettering? Even in the THX OT and Special
Editions VHS, the fullscreen versions were gold and the widescreen
versions were silver, and the OT DVD boxset followed that formula as
well, but the PT, everything is gold, format be damned. Wonder why Lucas
did that?

So as to sell an entire boxset later? :)

I am sure that the silver is actually platinum.

Could very well be, but that still doesn't explain the shift in the
pattern. The Special Edition boxset was Gold = Fullscreen / Platinum =
Widescreen; The OT DVD boxset was Gold = Fullscreen / Platinum =
Widescreen. All of the PT have gold lettering on the side, fullscreen,
widescreen, doesn't make a difference. I mean, they had great looking
artwork and drawings for the covers of the OT VHS Special Editions, but
chose to go with the same compsite real photo covers like they went with
for the Episode I & II covers, apparently in the interest of making the
whole series look alike on the shelf...except for the lettering on the
spines...and, oddly, when Episode I first came to DVD, it was only
available in widescreen...the fullscreen version didn't come along until
Episode II came out on DVD (available in both formats).

It doesn't seem to make sense. Episode I only being available in
widescreen, it should have had platinum lettering on the spine.

If I was going to put together a boxset like iii_soper has, I'd make the
spines match color-wise while I was shifting everything around.

Or at least I would, if it really bothered me, or I really cared...

The coloring difference never bothered me, I just considered it as
olympic medals for bad acting. OT got the silver, but PT definitely
takes the gold :)

You are brilliant!

I must find a Fry's Electronics store very soon now.
That project of yours looks very good.
I am impressed - you do not need to purchase a future boxed set from Master
Lucas. You have built a quality product that will last you generations of
entertainment sitting on your shelf.

By the way, I would love to see your DVD shelf - I'm sure it must look
equally as impressive.

Give me some ideas, I would love an excuse to use my hack saw, tools, etc.

Cheers!
