Harryhausen homage in ROTS [message #162229] Sa, 05 November 2005 10:32

When I first saw ROTS, and Grievous ignited his four lightsabres one at
a time at Obiwan, I was reminded of the Kali scene in The Golden Voyage
of Sinbad. The resemblance solidified when Greivous pointed all four
lightsabres directly at Obiwan, since this move in Golden Voyage is
practically identical. The six-armed Kali materializes six swords (the
blades extending lightsabre-ishly), and then points all six at Sinbad
to challenge him. I thought this was too much of a coincidence for it
not to be an homage, but I've not heard anyone else mention it, and it
never comes up in the DVD commentary. Did anyone else notice it?

Yeah, I think I can see what you're talking about. There seemed to be
this weird pause just before they ignite, too, which seemed
very......stop-motion actiony too.

It also always amazes me, for some reason, that so many critics say
they LOVE that image of Grievous walking forward spinning all the
lightsabres at once. It doesn't seem, to an avid sci-fi fan like me,
like a stunning image. Definitely very cool, no doubt, but not one that
"stands out." (I guess I was more impressed with Grievous in the Clone
Wars cartoon than I was in the movie)

I hadn't noticed that one! I mean, I know what you're talking about and now
I do remember the scene in Golden Voyage Of Sinbad that you're referring to,
so now I do see your point.

It's not unheard of, in Star Wars, referencing other movies.

In fact, GL did it in Attack Of The Clones...another homage, but I forget
the Harryhausen movie.

It's in the arena and Obi-Wan has gotten himself free and the that creature
is coming after him, Obi steals the lance from one of the Geonosian guards
and then uses it against the six-legged mantis thing, there's a wide shot of
Obi vs. Creature that matches a Harryhausen moment when a person is facing
off against a creature on a beach (a giant iguana, IIRC).

Wasn't the end of ANH where our heroes are honored an 'homage' to
_Triumph of the Will_.
