Despites an announcement to the contrary ROTS has been released on VHS as
well as DVD. There was some discussion about this a while back and some
posters were chagrined that they could not complete their collection of
video tapes; now they can.

WOO-HOO!!! :-)
So far the VHS copies have only turned up in Australia and New Zealand.
I might have to buy a pile to sell on ScamBay. ;-)

Well, if you're an Aussie or a Kiwi, sure....but not in any other part of
the world AFAIK.
I don't see this as a huge problem anyway what with DVDs being as cheap as
they are (OT for $45, Eps.1 & 2 about $15 each and ROTS $20) videophiles
will want the best version possible anyway.
Sure completists will complain, but let's face it, VHS is going the way of
the Dodo.
VHS is really only good as an historical record now.
I have at least 3 different OT box sets (2 Normal version and the SE) and I
have the Boxset only Widescreen version of Episode I and the regular Episode
II to round off the VHS history for my library (I also have the regular
Laserdisc versions (pre-SE individual LDs, the Definitive Collection CAV
boxset and the SE boxset), but I wouldn't want Sith on VHS...I'd never watch
it and the DVD is vastly superior anyway.

They only seem to be available in Australia and New Zealand, so far.
Here they're available in a chain of stores similar to Wal-mart and
K-Mart (ie. a massive shop that sells just about everything).
I picked up my VHS copy this morning. :-)
I would offer to get you or anyone else a copy, but it's a PAL version
and the price of shipping it from the bottom (in every sense) of the
planet would double the price.

Only in Australia and New Zealand apparently. That's weird. Amazon in the UK
has it listed but the picture looks like a stretched version of the DVD
cover.

That's weird. Is it full frame? Why only there? DVD players haven't
penetrated the market in Australia and New Zealand or what?

It's available in the UK as well. I saw it in Tesco today as I ran past

I haven't played it yet, but I think my VHS copy is "full frame" (it
doesn't say "widescreen" or similar anywhere on it), but I didn't
actually bother looking to see if there were two versions like there
was with previous Star Wars movies.
The label on the front of the cassette does say:
"Only for distribution in Australia and authorised Pacifif regions."
although I notice that VHS has now also turned up in the UK as well
(probably with a different label or as a grey import).
> DVD players haven't penetrated the market in Australia and New Zealand

Sort of. DVDs are very popular, especially now that DVD players are
reaching realistic prices and the game consoles and computers can play
DVDs too ... BUT there aren't any TIVO or similar devices here, so if
you want to record you need a VHS recorder or the still over-expenesive
DVD recorder / hard drive recorder, so VHS boxes are still very
prevalent. Also as DVD players are bought for the main lounge room the
old video box often gets moved to the kids room, and Star Wars is a
kid's movie.
There are a some models that include both a DVD player and a VHS
recorder in the same case - there's even a couple now that are DVD
recorder and VHS recorder in the same box.
Personally I'm waiting for a hard drive / DVD recoder / VHS recorder
all-in-one box to save space. :-)

I don't believe they put out a widescreen VHS for Ep II either.

Why can't you do it now? You input the VHS into the computer and record
onto a DVD-R. All you need is a video capture card and voila.

No idea. I didn't bother with the widescreen videos. All my video
versions are "pan 'n' scan". For Widescreen I've got the DVDs.

There is supposedly a similar device coming "soon" for SkyTV, but since
that's a subscription service not everyone has that anyway.

I was thinking more of having a single box sitting under the TV in the
lounge that can record TV (temporarily and permanently) and play my old
videos.
To transfer the videos to DVD I'd need a whole new computer (this one
is about seven years old and the quality of the video capture card
isn't very good) with a massive hard drive ... it's cheaper to get a
normal box. The combination DVD-R / VHS boxes can already dub the
videos to a DVD.

Um...........WHY would anyone care to have this film on VHS????
With DVD players cheaper than VHS players (sometimes only 20-30 dollars),
there's really no excuse for not having one - if you can afford to purchase
movies for it, you can afford buying the DVD player!!!!
VHS sucks - it was all we had back in the day, but now it's - shall I coin
an old term - oboslete.
I mean, who wants to deal with all that crap - machines eating tapes,
rewinding, etc???
I have two VCR's that will probably now last forever because I almost never
use them - I watch stuff on my DVR and DVD players....
Seriously - UPGRADE - VCR's are crap compared to modern formats!!!!!!

A. I wanted the VHS version as well as the DVD to complete the
collection of all six movies on VHS.
B. I don't want just a hopeless DVD *player* and DVD recorders are
still too expensive.
C. DVD *players* are obsolete already. They've been replaced by DVD
recorders and DVD / hard drive recorders, and are soon to be
replaced by HD-DVD and/or Blu-ray DVD players, which will then
be replaced by HD-DVD / Blu-ray DVD recorders, which will then
be replaced by holod-DVD players, ...
D. I've never had a tape "eaten" by a VCR.
E. It's not your money I'm spending, so why should you care?

We're talking YEARS here before the Blue-Ray will start building up a viable
library; in the meantime, you'll be able to watch your inexpensive yet
still-high-quality DVD's...

Not a "no name" cheapo box made in someone's back garden shed. I'm
talking about decent quality DVD recorders with a hard drive in them.
Here in New Zealand such a device costs anything from about US$550 to
US$820 (which is what a DVD player cost a couple of years ago).
Although they do make DVD-recorder / VHS combo boxes, they don't
include a hard drive ... yet!

Then you can give me the money to pay the above prices, and since it's
"the best" I'll also need another US$10,000 for the huge widescreen TV
and perfect sound system. ;-)

I got a Magnavox (new and at a reputable national chain store) six months
ago for just over $200. We are currently in the process of converting all
of our old home movies to DVD and I can tell you that the unit works
wonderfully. I'm sure you could have one shipped to New Zealand for less
than $300US, so why would the shops there think they could get away with
such prices?

That's only three years salary for you. What are you complaining about?

Shipping is horrendous when you live on the butt of the planet, miles
from anywhere - whether that's me importing a single product or a
distributor importing thousands of them. With such a small population
they pass on the cost and of course that raises the price more than
bigger countries or those closer to the manufacturing plants ...
SUPPOSEDLY. It is actually cheaper for me to import some stuff from
Australia then to buy it here.
Magnavox are (or were?) being sold here by grey importers, but it's one
of the many minor brands I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.
I also wouldn't import a DVD player / recorder from the US at any
price. I not 100% sure about the current models, but in the past almost
all American DVD players have had that silly region-locking nonsense in
them, while here in New Zealand almost none have it. Plus with any
electronic equipment there would be power and plug differences that
would need fixing.

It seems you are just hell bent to justify why not to own a DVD recorder.
They are more affordable today. Are you saying that living in New Zealand
makes it impossible to buy an affordable DVD recorder? Come on.

As I said, pricing in New Zealand *is* still expensive with a DVD /
hard drive recorder here currently costs around US$550 to US$820. This
is the same price that DVD players cost a couple of years ago. The
price will drop very quickly, then it might be worth buying one ...
although I'd still prefer a DVD / hard drive / VHS all-in-one box
(which they don't make yet) simply to keep things tidy and take up less
space.

That's why I call it "the butt of the planet" - and it's not just
because it is on the bottom of the globe.
The only bonus recently is getting the Episode III VHS (only available
in one chain store, but luckily there's branches all over the place),
although only in small numbers.

Yup. I can buy collectibles for friends in the UK and ship them for less
than they can get them for just walking into a shop down the street.

Hmmmm, it's a pretty major brand here. But to be quite honest, I don't care

Dunno about the region thing. If you are copying a tape or recording from
TV, does that even matter?
As for the power plug, I sell converters where I work and they're cheap as
chips.

That's all you've got? Well, I guess I can see why that issue is so
important to you. It seems that New Zealanders have the highest level of
anxiety about health care of any country surveyed. Health care may be a bit
cheaper there, but apparently it's not very good and is getting worse every
day.
http://www.wsws.org/news/1998/oct1998/nz-o28.shtml
Granted, this article is from seven years ago. I understand that NZ has
recently tried to partially privatize their health care system in an attempt
to save it from meeting the same fate as Canada's and that of other
government sponsored socialist systems. By contrast, the U.S. seems to be
going backwards and socializing more and more of its healthcare industry.
So, perhaps someday the argument could be made that the NZ healthcare
situation is better than that of the U.S., but not now.
Any other reasons why you think it would suck to live in the U.S.?

Yes, prices are getting costlier as a result of government intervention. At
least you can get healthcare here, though. If it is further socialized, it
will also be rationed like it is in Canada. They may have cheap care, but
just try getting it when you need it. Canadians stream across the border to
take advantage of a superior system that they constantly mock.

Now, the prescription drug industry is something I could really go off on.
They pass on all of their R&D costs to the U.S. citizens. Buying the
generic drugs from other countries should serve as a wakeup call to the
industry but, unfortunately, the drug lobbies run public policy. If higher
prescription drug costs are a reason why it sucks to live in the U.S.,
however, I would disagree. I think the best thing that could happen is from
U.S. citizens to be priced out of prescription drugs entirely. What the
drug companies sell, for the most part, is poison, and we'd all be much
healthier without it.
Serious question. Is it government's responsibility to provide free
healthcare to its citizens? If so, complete healthcare, or are there some
limitations?

Interestingly, Ontario recently went through the expense of making
everyone get picture ID"s to stem the problem of Americans coming
across the border and borrowing health care cards. A few years ago,
there were more health care cards in existence in New Brunswick than
there were legal residents of the province. It turns out that folks
from Maine were going to Canada for care with fake health care cards.

Many of the names on the outside are irrelevant since the insdies all
come from only a couple of companies anyway (especially the DVD drive
itself). The problem of course is that the main company keeps the
better products for themselves and sells the lesser ones to all those
"no-name" brands.
Many of the "no name" brands can also be crudely made and sufer from
all sorts of problems - both in terms of breaking or simply not working
properly with DVD menus, etc.

It can be done, but it looks messy using an adaptor / convertor, plus
being something else that can go wrong (usually exactly when you don't
want it to).

Don't waste your money - DVD recorders are a gimmick. If you're
interested in recording TV content you'd be much better off with a TiVO
or other PVR.
Just get a DVD player. Most NZ supermarkets sell decent players for
NZ$80 (US$60), and they often don't have all that region crap. Spend
$40 more or so and you'll get one that can play MPEG4 (xVid, DivX etc).
This isn't 1998, when you'd pay $1000 for a half-decent DVD player
that would only play Region 4 DVDs.
I'm sure you'll already know the picture and sound quality of DVD is
vastly superior to VHS. A shame that DVD had to settle for MPEG2
standard, but artifacts are barely noticeable unless you're watching it
on a 60" LCD. Longevity is one area where VHS might arguably have a
slight advantage - I suspect your tapes will still outlast many DVDs due
to cheap discs suffering de-lamination over time. So if you're a purist
by all means buy ROTS on VHS as well as DVD but don't pretend that it's
better.
As for picture/sound reproduction, most DVD players are pretty much the
same, expensive brand-names and cheap knock-offs alike. Just make sure
you get one with multi-channel digital sound output and doesn't have the
chroma bug (google for it if you're not sure about it).
