I may be wayyyy out of date with this as I've not visited
much of late, but I saw this on Empires website.

Having JRRT as the screenwriter is perhaps just a tad
enthusiastic, it's also light on any other information.

If you'll notice, IMDB also gives JRRT writing credits for all three of the
LotR movies.

Consider this web site a wish, not a rumor.
The movie isn't in production; I don't believe Jackson (or anyone else) has
even acquired the rights, yet, much less the necessary funding. And making a
feature film with the level of technology that would be required is a
project that would take a while, so I think a release date of Dec. '07 is
more than a bit optimistic.

They (new line and a other one) where struggling whit the right's of
the movie, I heard new line cinema and Peter Jackson doesn't have the
rights for filming the movie, I don't remember where I read it but they
are fighting over the rights. And that they do want to film it. But it
can take years.

You guys are a bit mistaken, the "Rights" too both "The Hobbit" and "TLoR's
were sold long ago for a small amount by todays standard by J.R. Tolkien
himself with the thought that they (the movies) could never be made. Somehow
somewhere the rights to "The Hobbit" got split with Newline aquirring the
rights to "make" the movie and MGM having the distrubution rights. It is
beleived that when the time comes there will be too much money to loose, to
not make the movie. Aka. the two will come to an agreement.

But the time hasn't come yet. If it takes two or three years to make a movie
from The Hobbit -- not unreasonable given the length of time to make the
three LOTR films -- an agreement would have to be reach just about now to
even have a hope of making it. And that's only if Jackson has nothing else
to do. I believe he's already signed on to do a film post-King Kong. I
believe he's producing (and maybe directing) the film version of the game
Halo.

No directing, just producing...he's slated to direct "The Lovely Bones" from
the Alice Sebold book.

Official Letter from New Line Cinema's Bob Shaye
Dear Loyal LOTR Fans,
Thank you very, very much for the incredible outpouring of support for LOTR,
and your eagerness to see THE HOBBIT.
We, at New Line, are most touched and appreciative of your compliments, and
your passion for the remarkable work of the author, the filmmakers, talent,
and craftspeople.
We are also, as you, most anxious to see THE HOBBIT realized.
Please be assured that there is, in no way, a crass argument with MGM or
anyone over money or rights. In fact, no discussions about any settlement of
our respective claims, has been commenced. When, and if, such discussions
ensue, be assured that we intend to be equitable and appropriate to the
spirit of Tolkien, and THE HOBBIT. We will, as much as possible, "do the
right thing", respecting the incredible loyalty and appreciation of the
worldwide fans. We hope that MGM will feel the same.
However, we also wish to have the film overseen by the best possible
mentors - and, for us, if possible, that means Peter and Fran. They are
totally occupied by KING KONG now and, we believe, will be the next
twenty-four months, or so.
So our efforts will take time to realize.
Sincerely,
Robert Shaye
Co-CEO/Co-Chairman
New Line Cinema

Hello,
I am a lurker and never post, but I felt the need.
Here is a website about the Hobbit film. At this site, you can see the
letter from New Line Cinema plus you can sign the petition and print
postcards that are ready to send to NLC.
http://www.thehobbitfilm.com/
Peter is still very busy with King Kong and he has another movie to make
before he could start the Hobbit, if it happens.
BTW, It is nice to know I am not the only person that keeps the work of
Tolkien in their heart.
