THE MAN TRAP: B [Bones acts too much like an idiot for this to get a
higher grade]
CHARLIE X: B+ [scary]
WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE: B+ [perennially underrated]
THE NAKED TIME: B+ [Strangely moving.]
THE ENEMY WITHIN: A- (Count me among the few who like it when Shatner
chews up scenery)
MUDD'S WOMEN: C [If Dr.Phil and some NBC staff hack wrote a Star Trek
episode. Good Finnerman close-up photography, at least (as always).]
WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF?: B [Hot babe. And now we know where
James Cameron ripped off the idea of Terminator's phone-call mimickry.]
MIRI: B+ [Always underrated. Good touch to make the children's taunts
echo throughout the streets. Kirk should not have to face later
Starfleet investigation for his conduct during this episode - the girl
is over 300 years old!]
DAGGER OF THE MIND: B+ [couldn't they have thought of something more
imaginative than the old "through the air vent" trick?]
THE CORBOMITE MANUEVER: B+ [Kirk, please banish Bones from the bridge -
permanently. Or at least earn the gratitude or your bridge officers and
rip his head off. And how much money did it take for Bailey's dad to
successfully bribe Starfleet Academy's admission's committee?]
THE MENAGERIE: A- [Final shot of Kirk's face, lit in wonder, is one of
the all-time classic TOS moments.]
THE CONSCIENCE OF A KING: D+ [What do people see in this piece of
obvious filler? Roddenberry should have called up his science-fiction
writer buds if he was struggling against time constraints and clueless,
stingy, NBC cigar-smoking execs]
THE BALANCE OF TERROR: A- [A toughie. A real toughie. Just a bit more
sense of danger facing the Enterprise towards the climax would have
given this one the A it really deserves.]
SHORE LEAVE: B [Simply meant to be a fun episode, like "Tribbles".]
THE GALILEO SEVEN: A- [What great direction. What amazing anger and
bitterness between Spock and the rest of the marooned crew. What a
wasted opportunity for Spock to sock a knuckle-sandwich into Bones'
hissing face without Kirk being around.]
THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS: B+ [Underrated. The guy who played the Squire
really stole the show. Are he and his parents Thasians?]
ARENA: B [I have a soft spot for this one. Tell the yahoos who protest
the "cheap, rubber suit" to chew on an uninflated tire]
TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY: B+ [I like Kirk's comments about the 1967
computer tapes being "antiques".]
COURT MARTIAL: B [It was never clear if Finney's daughter was in on the
plot]
THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS: B [The great "blown" episode. Everything up
to the climax had "A-" written all over it. Great atomosphere. Spooky.
Lots of cool things going on at once. Even cool 1880's duds that the
Enterprise landing party is wearing. And then comes the cliched climax
where Kirk talks the computer into self-destructing. Good grief.
Roddenberry had a way of sometimes shooting his own episodes in the
foot.]
SPACE SEED: A- [There's that incompetent admissions staff at Starfleet
Academy, again! Only 1 out-of-every 50,000 applicants are admitted, and
they send acceptance letters to both McGivers and Bailey.]
A TASTE OF ARMAGEDDON: B+ [the dialogue between Kirk and Spock really
begins to gel starting with this episode]
THIS SIDE OF PARADISE: C [Remarkable scenes of Kirk alone on the bridge
and, later, goading Spock with the most unbelievable insults
imaginable, can't save us from a by-the-numbers plot and an agonizingly
painful tender scene between Spock and Jill Ireland]
THE DEVIL IN THE DARK: A- [Yeah, it ends a little too neatly and
optimistically. But "...the pain...the murder..." is too good to be
missed.
ERRAND OF MERCY: A- [Excellent.]
THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR: C+ [Bad as it is, it's not the worst episode of
season one. And with some major tweaking, had the potential to be a 'B'
episode]
THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER: A+ [no terse comment necessary]
OPERATION ANNIHILATE!: B+ [I haven't watched this in a long time; it
might deserve an A-]

He is kind of muddle headed. But in his defense, the creature does seem to
have a hypnotic effect on people -- Kirk just sits there waiting to be
eaten, even after Spock pulls it off of him.

Yep; a fine show.

Yes. How come this works so much better than TNG's 'The Naked Now'?

Nobody does it better!

It's kinda strange, but fun.

A solid A. Sherry Jackson, Ted Cassidy, evil robot duplicates, Vulcan
racism, Sherry Jackson -- it's got it all.

I've got problems with Miri. That whole duplicate Earth is a bit much.
They addressed it finally 4 decades later in the Shatner novels. C.

C for me. There are people who dearly love Helen Noel, but I'm lukewarm on
her.

I'd give Corbomite a solid A. I was surprised when I watched the DVDs just
how well it holds up, and how much of the series is in place right from the
start.
>

A B for me. Maybe a B+. Fun, but doesn't make me crave to see it again.

I like Conscience of the King. Great babe, driven Kirk, our only visit ever
to the hangar deck observation area. Solid B for me.
>

Yeah, one last pass to make it space science instead of sub science.
>

Oh, at least a B+. Maybe an A-. If they'd had the elephant, an A.

I'm lukewarm on G7. Spock should have let a few more of his crew die. C.

I find Squire annoying. Probably worst of season for me. C-

A- for me. I like Arena. And boy howdy, is that rubber suit better than
that awful 21st Century Enterprise Gorn crapola.

yep

I think she figured it out, but wasn't in on it from the start. I also
think she thought her old man offed himself, not that he was hiding.

I think Kirk talking the computer down is only cliched in retrospect; isn't
this the first time he did it?
>

Every time I wonder how some incompetent fool got on Picard's ship, I
remember McGivers. The saving grace is that Kirk thought so little of her,
and noted she didn't contribute. That, and she died no doubt horribly on
Ceti Alpha.

I've never liked it. I don't know why. C, at best.

A B+ for me. Memorable stuff between Kirk and Spock and Spock and Lelia.
That 'you couldn't pronounce it' line. Lots of nice locations we never saw
before or after.

Yes. I've always enjoyed it a lot.

I like it better than Squire, and maybe better than G7. Still, it's at best
a C.

nope.

Another good show. Those location shows really hold up.

I like this one too. It's often just dismissed as a monster-on-the-loose
story, but it's deeper than that.
> CHARLIE X: B+ [scary]
It's okay, but I'm not a fan of the "omnipotent being" formula.
> WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE: B+ [perennially underrated]
Underrated, really? I think it's usually cited as one of the best episodes,
which I think it is.
> THE NAKED TIME: B+ [Strangely moving.]
Hey, anything with the word "naked" in the title in is good enough for me.

Preposterous premise, but entertaining.
> MUDD'S WOMEN: C [If Dr.Phil and some NBC staff hack wrote a Star Trek

Yep, pretty mediocre.

Shhh, you'll convince Robert Bloch to pull a Harlan Ellison and sue James
Cameron.

Liked it.

Liked it.

Pretty decent.
> THE MENAGERIE: A- [Final shot of Kirk's face, lit in wonder, is one of

I didn't like Spock going rogue. How can anyone ever trust him again?
> THE CONSCIENCE OF A KING: D+ [What do people see in this piece of

I really liked this one. Good drama, good mystery and some tidbits into
Kirk's background.
> THE BALANCE OF TERROR: A- [A toughie. A real toughie. Just a bit more
> sense of danger facing the Enterprise towards the climax would have

My favorite of all.
> SHORE LEAVE: B [Simply meant to be a fun episode, like "Tribbles".]
Another favorite.
> THE GALILEO SEVEN: A- [What great direction. What amazing anger and
> bitterness between Spock and the rest of the marooned crew. What a

Spock was an excellent supporting character, and this episode shows that it
was wise to keep him as a supporting character. He just did not have the
charisma to be a lead character.
> THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS: B+ [Underrated. The guy who played the Squire
> really stole the show. Are he and his parents Thasians?]
A disappointment to me since it was written by the guy who wrote "Balance of
Terror". Probably due to my bias against the "omnipotent being" theme.
> ARENA: B [I have a soft spot for this one. Tell the yahoos who protest
> the "cheap, rubber suit" to chew on an uninflated tire]
Liked it.
> TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY: B+ [I like Kirk's comments about the 1967

I always thought time travel as a premise was too much of a crutch. Can't
think of a good story this week? No problem. We'll just send the gang back
in time. This was pretty entertaining though.
> COURT MARTIAL: B [It was never clear if Finney's daughter was in on the
> plot]
I got the impression she believed he was dead at first, then found out later
that he was still alive. Anyway, I liked it. No aliens, no time travel, no
alternate dimensions, just a good, basic human drama.
> THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS: B [The great "blown" episode. Everything up

Kind of slow moving. But I always liked when Kirk used his powers of
persuasion. It should him as a man of brains as well as brawn. And since
this is the first episode in which Kirk was shown outsmarting a computer, it
shouldn't be dismissed as a cliche.
> SPACE SEED: A- [There's that incompetent admissions staff at Starfleet

Another good one. Kirk shows brains and brawn.

A great episode for Kirk.

Of all the people on the ship, only Kirk could resist the spores. What a
guy.
> THE DEVIL IN THE DARK: A- [Yeah, it ends a little too neatly and

Again, not just a monster-on-the-loose story.

Eh, omnipotent beings again. A little disappointing to me because any
respectible superior being should be able to see that the Klingons deserved
to get their BUTTS KICKED!!

I actually kind of liked it.

Time travel again, but got to admit, a really good drama.

Well this WAS a monster-on-the-loose story (or monsters), but a good
diversion.

The evil children thing was already overdone in 1966, but still a good romp.

This gets an A! Balok's faking them out was a great idea, and Clint Howard
was a cool choice. But Baily...who cast this bad actor?

I have to agree. The one cool thing about this episode was the great acting
by Shatner. When Lenore really goes whack, he has this reaction where he
gets this look on his face that says, "Ohmygod, I slept with her?" Jim,
I've been there, I feel your pain.

A! It talks about prejudice in a realistic adult manner, unlke so much
television (including other Trek episodes). And Nimoy was just amazing. The
cheesy wedding scene was the only part I hated.

The opening really hooked me. And the premise is very Trekish.

A+! The guest star was outstanding, the scene with Kirk under arrest was
hilarious, the whole thing was just remarkable.

The sexual licentiousness in a brief period of release....very mature
concept for the perios.

Yeah, but Ricardo Montalban was outstanding. And what a great plot to the
whole episode.

Quite a mature concept for the time. Introducing humility to our heroes.
Too bad TNG didn't follow up on this one.

It was horrible! Stupid story, lame FX, and a terrible guest star (in
fairness, he was a last minute replacement).

No, it was pretty weak actually. Melodramatic, took a good premise and
didn't do much with it. And the McGuffin to solve the dilemma - stupid!

Sherry Jackson as Andrea the Android - most attractive woman ever to appear
in Trek. When this aired I was about four years old (and already a Trek

I might be too hard on the concept of the self-destructing computer;
even OUR computers of today freeze and get screwed up with just the
slightest bit of extra "mental" effort (as I know all too well.)

I might've been a bit too hard on this one. In retrospect, a B- for me
(because of the great individual moments). I just thought the idea of
everybody immediately coming back to their senses after engaging in a
few angry words and fisticuffs was lame.

You're right - the Organians were morons not to see that the Klingons
were murdering villians who needed to be stopped by whatever force was
necessary. They made it out as if the Federation and the Klingon Empire
were equally bad. Kirk was right when he said that the Federation had
"legitimate grievances" against the Klingons.

I'm beginning to have second thoughts on this one, too. I'll have to
change my mind and give it an A- (some critic I am!) I thought the guy
who played Bailey was pretty good, though; his job was to portray some
flaky, dopey young Lt., and that he certainly was. Kirk wasn't thinking
too clearly when he promoted Bailey to the bridge. At least Kirk made
up for his earlier mistake, and left him with Balok.

They were equally annoying to the Organians. For the Organians to
care about the "legitimate grievances" of the Federation against the
Klingons, would be like the Federation caring about the legitimate
grievances of the many victims of aggressors on more primitive
planets, which they don't.

Spock said that the incorporeal Organians were as above humans on the
evolutionary scale, as humans are above the amoeba. If so, then at
their level the Organians couldn't care less about how and why the
Federation and Klingons were fighting. To them, it meant no more than a
"war" between two colonies of ants means to us.

Not hardly. When's the last time you saw a person worried that two ant
mounds were killing too many of each other?
The reason that they overcame their feelings of disgust about
interfering and did it anyway was not that they found the whole matter
too trivial to bother with (obviously). Looks more like they just
didn't do their homework about what the Klingons were like.

The Organians weren't weren't worried about what the Klingons and the
humans were doing to each other. They didn't give a damn. They were
annoyed because they were doing it near Organia.

<<WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE: B+ [perennially underrated]
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
One of the best. Grade A. Great dialogue throughout. Spock telling Kirk
"Kill him why u can". Kirk telling Spock to get the hell out. Great
guest spots from Lockwood and Kellerman.
<<THE NAKED TIME: B+ [Strangely moving.]>>>>>>>>
A-..... One of Scotty's great moments..."He's turned the engines off
cold!"
<<THE ENEMY WITHIN: A- (Count me among the few who like it when Shatner
chews up scenery) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
A bit too much chewing for me.....plus Lt Leslie almost freezes to
death. B-
<<MUDD'S WOMEN: C [If Dr.Phil and some NBC staff hack wrote a Star Trek
episode. Good Finnerman close-up photography, at least (as
always).>>>>>
I like it. Love the music. Harry Mudd is one of the great Star Trek
characters (later ruined in "I, Mudd") A little unrealistic how Eve
makes the transformation at the end without the Venus drug however. I
like all the bridge scenes where they keep losing power, good tension,
even though the whole thing about not having back-up dilithium crystals
is a bit of a stretch. (Tho they maintained that conceit in Elaan of
Troyius) Solid B
<<WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF?: B [Hot babe. And now we know where
James Cameron ripped off the idea of Terminator's phone-call
mimickry.]>>>>>>>>>>
This one always holds up for me. Somewhat creepy episode. Continues in
the "Space is a lonely place" theme established in previous eps. Sherry
Jackson has no bearing on why I like this episode. Okay, that's a lie.
An A- for me.
<<MIRI: B+ [Always underrated. Good touch to make the children's taunts
echo throughout the streets. Kirk should not have to face later
Starfleet investigation for his conduct during this episode - the girl
is over 300 years old!]>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Anthing with children in it ruins an episode for me (See "And the
CHildren Shall Lead") The whole Red Herring at the beginning of the ep
was lame, like they needed a good opening tease. And no I'm not talking
about Kim Darby. This one rates a C.
<<<DAGGER OF THE MIND: B+ [couldn't they have thought of something more
imaginative than the old "through the air vent" trick?]>>>>>>>>>
Yes the air vent is a cliche, but we get to see Helen crawl through it
so it can't be that bad. A lot to like for me; first mind meld, hot
psychiatrist, neural neutralizer (seemingly later revived in "Whom Gods
Destroy") crazy Simon Van Gelder exposing the weak bridge security. B+
for me.
<<<THE CORBOMITE MANUEVER: B+ [Kirk, please banish Bones from the
bridge -
permanently. Or at least earn the gratitude or your bridge officers and
rip his head off. And how much money did it take for Bailey's dad to
successfully bribe Starfleet Academy's admission's
committee?]>>>>>>>>>>
Shows Kirk at his best. Good tension throughout. B+
<<THE MENAGERIE: A- [Final shot of Kirk's face, lit in wonder, is one
of
the all-time classic TOS moments.]>>>>>>>>>>>>
Good use of the original pilot, even if Spock's actions were a bit over
the top. Got to see a Starbase for the first time. Malachi Throne. A-
<<THE CONSCIENCE OF A KING: D+ [What do people see in this piece of
obvious filler? Roddenberry should have called up his science-fiction
writer buds if he was struggling against time constraints and clueless,
stingy, NBC cigar-smoking execs]>>>>>>>
Kodos the Executioner, great piece of Trek lore. Crazy but beautiful
daughter. Love the opener, like the scenes of life on a Federation
planet, love how Kirk calls in a favor to the Transport captain, Uhura
sings again. and yeah, the observation deck. B+
<<THE BALANCE OF TERROR: A- [A toughie. A real toughie. Just a bit more
sense of danger facing the Enterprise towards the climax would have
given this one the A it really deserves.]>>>>>>>
The best. A+. Nothing to dislike. Introduces the Romulans. Best ending
in Trek episode history (save maybe City on the Edge), Kirk consoling
the Bride to be, then walking down the hallway, life on a Starship goes
on.
<<SHORE LEAVE: B [Simply meant to be a fun episode, like
"Tribbles".]>>>>>>>>>>>>>
A fun episode, Barrows was a babe. Gives a little history on Kirk.
Great music. Solid B.
<<<THE GALILEO SEVEN: A- [What great direction. What amazing anger and
bitterness between Spock and the rest of the marooned crew. What a
wasted opportunity for Spock to sock a knuckle-sandwich into Bones'
hissing face without Kirk being around.]>>>>>>>>>>>
Kind of a "Lifeboat" episode. Spock never really has to make a decision
of who to leave behind however, since enuff crewmembers die to make the
decision moot. Kirk should have pummeled that jerk who kept showing up
on the bridge. B-
<<<<THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS: B+ [Underrated. The guy who played the Squire
really stole the show. Are he and his parents Thasians?>>>>>>>>>>
This one doesnt hold up well. On repeat viewings, Trelane is just
annoying. I kinda like the set however. C+
<<ARENA: B [I have a soft spot for this one. Tell the yahoos who
protest
the "cheap, rubber suit" to chew on an uninflated tire>>>>>>>>>>>>
Introduces another new species, one which doesn have ridges on their
forehead (which is about as original as B&B got) Good yarn. B
<<<<<<TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY: B+ [I like Kirk's comments about the 1967
computer tapes being "antiques".]>>>>>>>>>>>>
Solution is cockeyed. B-
<<<<<<<COURT MARTIAL: B [It was never clear if Finney's daughter was in
on the
plot] >>>>>>>>>>>>
The whole "heartbeat" thing was silly. And if you think about it,
Samuel T Cogley isnt that great of a lawyer, Kirk was going to lose if
Spock hadn't come in with new evidence at the last minute. I did like
the bar scene where Kirk bumped into Areel Shaw, and Kirk's
confrontation with Comm Stone was a great Kirk moment. B
<<<<THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS: B [The great "blown" episode. Everything
up
to the climax had "A-" written all over it. Great atomosphere. Spooky.
Lots of cool things going on at once. Even cool 1880's duds that the
Enterprise landing party is wearing. And then comes the cliched climax
where Kirk talks the computer into self-destructing. Good grief.
Roddenberry had a way of sometimes shooting his own episodes in the
foot.]>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Always liked this one. Surprised some of the images got by the sensors.
B+
<<<<SPACE SEED: A- [There's that incompetent admissions staff at
Starfleet
Academy, again! Only 1 out-of-every 50,000 applicants are admitted, and
they send acceptance letters to both McGivers and Bailey.]>>>>>>>>>>
A bonafide classic. One of the great villians in TV history. A+
<<<<<<<<<A TASTE OF ARMAGEDDON: B+ [the dialogue between Kirk and Spock
really
begins to gel starting with this episode]>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Solid. Very prophetic episdoe. B+
<<<<<<<<<<THIS SIDE OF PARADISE: C [Remarkable scenes of Kirk alone on
the bridge
and, later, goading Spock with the most unbelievable insults
imaginable, can't save us from a by-the-numbers plot and an agonizingly
painful tender scene between Spock and Jill Ireland]>>>>>>>>>>>
Great music, dialogue, right on the money about the scene where Kirk
tells Spock he belongs "in the circus, right next to the dog-faced
boy." A-
<<<<<<<THE DEVIL IN THE DARK: A- [Yeah, it ends a little too neatly and
optimistically. But "...the pain...the murder..." is too good to be
missed. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Like the atmoshere and set design. Good creature. Great opening teaser.
A-
<<<<<<ERRAND OF MERCY: A- [Excellent.] >>>>>>>
Introduces the klingons. Great menacing performance from Baltar
himself, John Colicos. B+
<<<<<<<<<THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR: C+ [Bad as it is, it's not the worst
episode of
season one. And with some major tweaking, had the potential to be a 'B'
episode] >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
C-.... had potential, but the script had too many holes.
<<<<<<<THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER: A+ [no terse comment
necessary]>>>>>>>>
A+
<<<<<OPERATION ANNIHILATE!: B+ [I haven't watched this in a long time;
it
might deserve an A-]>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Decent creature feature, despite the whole "Vulcan inner eyelid" thing
saving Spock's sight. B+

What bothered me about "Conscience of a King" was that it hardly seemed
like science fiction; it could have been a plot for any type of show.
It was never explained why Kirk acts like a complete jerk and refuses
to tell Spock and Bones what's wrong with him. And is McCoy really that
dumb not to see that Riley was poisoned? (Is it everyday that some
poison ends up in the crew's food?)

It would have been awesome on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

How do you figure out McCoy doesn't see Riley was poisoned?
