I've been a Trekkie for a long time and never considered watching the Tim
Allen sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest but I caught it on TV tonight and I was
amazed. This film captured in it's playing time, the entire essence of
Trek - or what it has become, from it's roots as low-budget but serious TV
science fiction, to aging actors and fan conventions, to an amazing science
fiction adventure, and then to a "new generation" of the show after years
off the air... and it does it brilliantly with a great story and great
comedy.
There is so much Trek inside this film that most audiences wouldn't see or
get it. I recommend you guys to watch it if you can. The moment the rock
monster appeared out of the rocks, I laughed like crazy while nobody else
did because I understood immediatly that this was a joke referencing William
Shatner's desire to have animated rock monsters at the end of Star Trek V
but never being able to do it.
And the ending even has a parody of Trek's "reset button" pandemic. Tim
Allen does a great Kirk in this film (even eating Iowa steak and having his
shirt torn off in a fight on a rocky desert planet), and Alan Rickman's
performance is very much like Nimoy's hatred of the Spock character and
desperation to distance himself from it in the 70s. My only disappointment
is that they didn't capitalize further on Sigourney Weaver's potential of
making fun of Ripley from the Aliens films.
Anyway, if you want Star Trek XI, try watching this instead. You'll get a
breath of fresh air in Starship design at least (the ship, shuttlecraft,
etc. are blatantly Trek copied but much more inspired), plus you'll see all
those old Trek cliches played out and emphasized for comedy.

If you liked Galaxy Quest, check out this fan site. It's done in
similar vein to the movie. That is, done as if it is a tribute to a
real sci-fi series.

Yes, IMHO, GQ is the best Trek movie ever made. ;)

I was surprised when I first saw it. I was expecting...well, I was
expecting a movie that did not "respect" Trek the way it actually did. I
don't know if you can call it a 'parody', in the normal sense, because most
parodies rip the original material to shreds to get their laugh. GQ didn't
tear our beloved Trek pretty much at all; it was more a "take-off" of Trek
than a true "parody"

Glad you liked it. I stumbled across it a few months back while
searching the web for info regarding a sequel.
