OT: A sad day for comedy [message #143757] Mi, 05 Oktober 2005 00:42

Just got home from work, and found out that Ronnie Barker passed away last
night.....I'm stunned, and extremely sorry to hear the news.....He was in my
opinion, the single best comedy actor this country has ever
produced.....Even better than the late great Stan Laurel.....

In a touching gesture, fans of the great man all over the country are
reportedly displaying four lit candles in their windows tonight.....I can
imagine him looking down and cracking a grin at the gesture.....

RIP Ronnie, aka Fletcher, aka Arkwright, aka Clarence etc etc

On the South bank of the Seine stands the La Conciergerie, where Marie
Antoinette was held prisoner before her death.

Across the water, to the North, is the last Renaissance fountain in Paris -
La Fountaine des Innocents, sculpted by Jean Goujon.

In 1792, access to the old quay connecting the two locations was closed. The
sign posted remains to this day, observing that one couldn't be in La
Conciergerie and Innocent at the same time:

AU VIEUX QUAI INTERDIT

Over the years the phrase became corrupted, which is of course how we got
the old English saying ...

'ave your cake and eat it.

In memory of Ronnie Barker, 1929-2005.

Sean.

I made a slightly different tribute, by carrying three forks in my top
pocket at work, with the handles showing.

A fair number of people at work understood and appreciated the gesture. :)

There are 10 types of people in the world.
Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Saturday I went to a memorial vigil for Lennox Sweeney at
the corner of Winchester & Stevens Creek in San Jose. See my
take on the event by clicking on his name on my front page.
Sunday I walked precinct 2110 in Palo Alto for Peter Drekmeier.

Instead of the "four candles" it was what Ronnie actually wanted "fork
'andles" :)
