My advice to any Douglas Adams fans who haven't watched the movie or
bought the DVD yet is not to. It is appallingly bad. With Adams' humor
all removed to make a dumbed-down inoffensive version for the American
market it was so bad I gave up partway into it, ejected the DVD, and
threw it in the rubbish bin where it belongs.
I've got a copy of the real Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie. The
one the BBC made back in the 1980s. The one that Adams really wrote.
When he was alive. I love it. I replay it every so often, and I'm going
to have to copy it to DVD before I wear the tape out. It is funny. The
new version is just terrible. It defames the memory of a great author.

You have my support. I read all five novels for the first time, a couple of
weeks prior to the opening. It really looking forward to the movie.
It was apalling.

Errmmm...
Wouldn't this rant have been better off under one of the existing recent
subjects, such as "the Movie was Very Disappointing" or "the DVD"?
To brazenly say "DON'T BUY THE DVD", although shockingly similar to the
phrase "DON'T PANIC" except that it wasn't in large, friendly letters, and
merely does the following:
1) insult those who actually enjoyed Douglas' script [you know, the one that
got bandied around, almost dropped until a different studio took over and
went back to Douglas' writing]
2) insult the general population of free-thinking persons who can rent the
movie, or may have seen it at their local theatre and have the free will to
decide if it was worth buying
3) insult those who will buy anything that remotely says "the Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy" because the franchise itself contains much that is
awesome, and they probably own a full box of 1980's-era "Hitchhikers Guide
to the Galaxy" condoms - unused, of course.
4) further insult those who bought the DVD not even knowing the books/tv
series/records but just heard it was kinda cool - much like the sad group of
people in the world who bought Kate Hudson in "Le Divorce" or a Ford
Cortina, and ended up with something unexpected.
"Don't Buy the DVD" is a command - none of us are dogs, or if we are, we're
not your dog.
You're entitled to your opinion, and in fact, please give it to us - much of
your opinion may be wrong, and we'd be happy to correct you, or even argue
your opinion.
After all, that's what this NG has been about for all these years.
Am I flaming you wickedly? Um, yes. Is it nasty of me? Um, yes. Do you
deserve it? Um, most likely. Is it really early in the morning? Um,
yesssss[snore]

Well that was clever wasn't it....
do you come from the school of thought that say's things like "I hate Jeremy
Beadle. If I see him on my TV again, I'll put my foot through the screen and
send him the bill"?

The one that Adams hated, and always regretted making?....

And who do you think wrote the screenplay for the film?

I thought it was days at the most. What if Arthur was acting hung
over because of the drinking he did at that party? That would fit
it all together neatly.

Arthur's hangover was due to his drinking in the pub the previous night
while complaining about the council's decision to build a by-pass through
his home.
Also, from Chapter 13 when Arthur tells Ford where he's met Zaphod (or Phil
before):
Arthur would not be deterred. "A party six months ago. On Earth...
England..."

In the novel, yes. But in the computer game, it's clearly stated that
Arthur was hung over because of attending someone's birthday party the
night before.

Wasn't the birthday party at the pub?

You are quite right, of course.
Just to check I played until that part, and here is the exact quote:
>drink beer
It's very good beer, brewed by a small local company. You particularly
like the flavour, which is why you woke up feeling so wretched this
morning. You were at somebody's birthday party here in the pub last
night.

I thought reading the book that Arthur was discovering the plot
to destroy his home when he looked out the window and saw the
Catapillar tractor on the march.

That's when the fog of the hangover lifts and Arthur remembers they're
coming to knock his house down. If he hadn't already known about the
demolition of his house to make way for a bypass, he couldn't have the
exchange about bypasses and locked filing cabinets with Prosser.

If I'm not mistaken that is actually the cause of his hangover in the
books, he went to the pub and complained to everyone else at great
length, and got rather drunk...
But again, in the computer game, that's different. There the demolition
orders are in the junk mail you find in your house, and dated two years
earlier than the present date.
