Or get one of those really thick books that has them all together
in the proper order. Although they occasionally omit a page or two
that leaves out important information about a story's ending gag...
:) That's how I got them, then Mostly Harmless when it was first
released. My first exposure to the series was through the TV
adaptation on PBS. It made me dig up the books at Walden's and found
the then "More Than Complete" collection, which was rendered a total
lie about 1 year later with the publication of MH.

Where does "The Salmon of Doubt" fit into all this (or what is The
Salmon of Doubt?). I saw this at the library but it didn't fit into
either of your orders.

It's the fourth book in the five-book series... if that's what you're
asking.

Err, no it's not. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish is the fourth book in
the 'trilogy'
The Salmon of Doubt is the collection of previously unpublished work (along
with a chunk of what was to be the Salmon of Doubt) published after Douglas'
death.
SOD was either a Hitch Hikers novel, a Dirk Gently novel, or both, depending
on your position in the Space Time Continuum.

The chunk in the book is definitely Dirk, though.

Yes, you're right. I couldn't remember off the top of my head which it ended
up though :)

In SOD it says that it started as DG, but Douglas had a note to rewrite it
for THHGTTG
